It mostly takes a willingness to try and learn through error.Just have to fool the eye from a distance of around 2-3 feet or greater into having it look good.

If you ever feel like you didn't do a good job you can always strip the paint off and start over. I always have to remember that any progress I'm going to have will be in incremental steps. Each time you'll get a little better or learn a little more. Watch as many videos and read tips that people post. Bob may have used a different canvas and oil points but he's right that it's a good day when you can pant.

this is a basic on drybrushing and washing, but from there you should be able to find more vids on other techniques. Just find what works for you and roll with it. One of the best ways to learn to paint is to paint along side someone. I don't know if you still can or not, but GW stores did use to do free painting lessons, if not just watch one of the guys in there paint and take some notes!

Art-wise, Bob Ross is a great TV mentor--but..."We don't make mistakes. We only have happy accidents." Is that what his hairstylist told him? He looks like he drybrushes with that do.

Apparently he hated his 'Fro' but kept it because of marketing. There have been tons of fads when looking back everyone said "WTF!".

He's following his paintings off to the side as he paints each canvas. That still doesn't detract from his painting ability at all since he replicated an entire painting without any breaks, impressive.
