Simple and effective Heroquest painting

Also, there's nothing wrong with the 'drab' style. I myself don't like the cartoony style for anything other than pin-up, Japanese, or 1980s' styles.

With regards to bases for the miniatures, where can I get some HeroQuest style bases?

Also once we have finished the original quests I'm thinking of writing some of my own using HeroQuest rules on the AHQ boards so will be introducing new Monsters and Heroes and therefore miniatures but I'm wondering which bases to use, I quite like the look of the 30mm round slotted lipped bases but 30mm is quite large for 20mm squares, I've done some research and I've even seen 1p and 2p coins in use!

Finally I'm looking at painting my Goblins first but don't want to do the usual cartoon green, does anyone have any experience of painting Goblins / Orcs with sallow, yellow/brown dirty skin tones...

Finally you can always cannibalize some cheap goblins or orcs from eBay.

I've gone the opposite route - since I use a larger scale board I've put all my models on 25mm round bases.

You just trim the edges of the model base and it fits into the recessed part to the perfect height. Then just fill in the gaps with a bit of greenstuff. The bases are designed to be used either way up because they don't taper, so it looks great.

I couldn't bring myself to do that. I'd just end up with more orc and goblins.

I'm still procrastinating rather than actually painting and claiming that it is 'research' but I uncovered two basic styles and would appreciate some advice

1) Start in the middle - white primer, apply base coat, then use inks/washes to get your shadows and dry brushing to get your highlights (not necessarily in that order)

2) Start dark - black primer, darker base coat then lighten up / highlight with at least one if not two coats

Have I identified the two main methods, if not what have I missed if so which do you prefer and why?

Also any suggestions for a recipe (combination of colours) for Goblin Flesh that isn't green, something pale, dirty maybe with a hint of yellow-green, just to separate them from the Ghouls...
