Wear nitrile gloves while you're casting that stuff. The chemical interaction that begins when you combine the water and powder affects exposed skin, even at proximity. There's no serious danger, but having your hands feel sunburnt in the dead of winter may not be fun for you. I recommend a mask, too. The powder gets into your sinuses, too.

I assembled a vibration table today for the castings. On the Hirst Art site he builds one for $40. I built this for about $9. The massage piece I got at Walmart for $5, the zip ties were $1, the screws were $1, the sponges were $2. I used one of the wood pieces I had from before that were left over and just attached the massage device to it with the zipties and screws as anchors. Then taped the sponges to the bottom of it.

Also picked up some Tupperware containers to store the castings and a digital scale to measure the mixes with. Time to dive in!

p.s. thanks for the advice. I was planning on wearing gloves, but good call on the mask. I have one left over laying around somewhere.

Not bad for my first night of castings. First time doing anything with dental stone and I can't complain.

Man, Hirstart must really have struck gold with those molds. I don't see anyone using anything else bar homemade tiles/molds! These are the Google of molds.
Looking forward to seeing the whole thing put together.

On a sidenote, I hope one day to see a 3D dungeon actually representing the walls the same way as on the original board. Preserving the tile layout, but making thin white lines for walls.

I've thought about it, but it's hard to do. The walls have to be so thin as to be fragile else the square don't line up for rooms and corridors, and you can have a door (or secret door) anywhere, and anyway most of the models in the game are too large to fit between the walls (even if a goblin can, an Ogre won't unless you make the squares ridiculously large).

The Hirst molds are terrific. The small air bubbles you see are my own fault, not a reflection of his quality. As far as homemade molds go, I will have to make my own for the different room tiles. I am thinking I can just modify the uncracked tiles to show the floor patterns but I'm not sure. I don't feel comfortable recasting his tiles so I might just start fresh with a 1x1 wooden tile and go from there.

The Merlin's Magic dental stone I'm using goes for around $1 per pound it seems. The shipping is what can break the bank though. $20 just to ship a 25lb box.

Use a mitre box w/ a razor saw to customize bricks. Hirst doesn't care if you recast his stuff as long as you don't sell it.
