Plague of Zombies
Well, Puck came today, the first time for many moons. I decided to lead him through Phoenix’ Plague of Zombies. He took in Stony, a Barbarian, Ronald, a Wizard, Bodo, a Hobbit & his old favourite Zargon the Orc –Slayer. Zargon has survived many Quests and is a wise old Hero, but tends to lose his cool at times.
We set to, and Bodo soon established hisself as a “Mummy Slayer”, killing both Mummys in the first room, round the top of the board. His buddy Stony watched his back, whilst Ronald and Zargon went the other way, down the corridor, round the corner, to the room with the Cupboard. Here they cleaned up. The Orcs in the top room trimmed up Stony, so Ronald had to rush up to play Heal Body on him, to restore his cred.
Zargon searches around for Treasure, and opens the door into the empty room next to where he is. His buddy Ronald is back, so they open up into the central corridor containing two Mummys. Zargon goes in for the kill, one goes down. Meantime, Bodo enters the Fireplace room, and searches for Treasure. Trust his luck, he turns up a WM, but suffers no ill effects. Stony rushes in behind him to attack and kill a Zombie. Zargon comes under attack, and two Zombies are after Ronald. On his turn, he casts Fires of Wrath, but the Zombie aces him, so is OK. Ronald is a running fool, fleeing for his life, manages to slip past his pals and is safe, for a while. Bodo comes into play, downs a Zombie. It’s pal ripostes, to no avail. Zargon down this artist, and we journey on.
Bodo and Zargon reach room B. Bodo opens the RH chest first, and collects the contents. Zargon fails to reach the second chest, on his turn, so Bodo does the double and opens this one too, suffering the consequences. Image this, Bodo armed with a Fearsome Frypan finds hisself transported to a room packed with Undead. Two Skells attack him, one hit. The rest of the Undead are completely Flabbergasted and Discumnockerated by his rrival, and fail to act.
We pass through the Hero sequence, on to Bodo. We wait with baited coffee-breath. He pours a Vial of Holy Water on one Skell, and makes for the door into the corridor. The enraged Skells are after him, and attack, but to little affect. Bodo keeps on running, chased by the unclean Undead, but, Heavens to Betsy, they just cannot catch him!
Stony accepts Pass thro’ Rock from Ronald, find hisself in the Exit Door corridor, but carries on through into the outside corridor, behind Bodos’ pursuers, attacking a Mummy, to no effect. Zargon the Orc-Slayer opens the door into the Weapons Rack room, rushes in, and one Zombie goes down. Bodo flees on, the Skells in Hot Pursuit, but they can’t catch him! The Mummys stay to attack Stony, but no effect, he defends well. He drinks a Heroic Brew, found earlier, and downs the two Mummys.
Ronald decides to cast the Genie spell on the central room, revealing the Death Master. Bodo attacks his pursuers, yet again, to no avail. Then he comes under attack, takes some hits. Zargon batters his way out of the Weapons Rack room, coming to the aid of the embattled Bodo, in the outside LH corridor.
We journey on. The Heroes are divided on the board, the Wizard Ronald out on his own, to the right, a bad move! So, I send the Death Master after him. The other three Heroes are in the LH corridor, hear Ronalds screams of terror, and are battling the hoards of undead to reach him. Bodo is killed in the crush of Zombies, his Fearsome Frypan lying discarded. Zargon, a spellcaster in his own right, casts Veil of Mist on himself, manages to reach the Weapons Rack room, where the DM is, but fails to reach and attack him. The DM immediately casts Command on him, and sends him back to attack Stony! getting four good hits on him. Zargon can’t crack the Command spell, the DM directs him to keep knocking lumps off Stony! The DM chases after Ronald, with three Zombies in attendance. Zargon finally breaks the spell, and turns on the Undead. Ronald is in a bad situation, in deep s---! He is jammed up against a blockage in the corridor, right up at the top of the board. Stony steps on a Spear trap, loses his last BP, so is down and out!
The Death Master plays Summon Undead, rolls a Six! Two Mummys, Two Zombies. Ronald sinks deeper and deeper. Zargon is fighting desperately to reach him, Zombies falling right and left. Ronald casts Rock Skin, survives an attack, but is killed by a Mummy next attack.
So, only Zargon is left. He reaches the DMs’ Lair, searches for Treasure, turns up a Potion of Speed, decides Discretion is the Better Part of Valour, and heads for the Exit, bottom centre corridor.
Alltogether, a cracking Quest. Felicitations to Phoenix for dreaming it up. The DM lives to fight another day! I will have to write a Sequel.
