Ice Ledge and Bottomless Chasm

Postby wallydubbs » March 11th, 2019, 4:00 pm

Are treasure searches allowed in the Ice Ledge/Chasm room? Or even living fog room, for that matter...
What do you think, how do you guys play?

Well it's not really a room. I picture it more as a snowy mountainous terrain that the heroes have to cautiously tried across and try not to slip on the ice. Plus they may need to pick through the permafrost to find anything...

And the living fog, I guess would too thick to see through. Plus how would the heroes even know if there are any more monsters there? I would assume the fog continues to take shape of monsters even after all of them are dead.

It has been a LONG time since I've read the Frozen Horror. Is there a chance of slipping on the icy ledge?
I would say if they are bothering to check for treasure, it would require an EXTRA chance of slipping.

Same with the living fog room - is it poisonous? If they are spending more time there...whatever is
required - damage taken, chance for damage, etc. - it requires an EXTRA chance, damage, etc.

Whenever a hero enters the Ice Ledge room, he rolls to see if he slips. On a roll of a black shield he/she slips on the ice. The room also dips towards the center, after slipping the hero slides towards the edge. He rolls the combat dice a 2nd time, on a roll of a black shield again, he/she slips over the ledge and falls into a bottomless chasm. So sad.
I like this thought, to roll again if one wishes to search this room for Treasure.

The fog, however, is different then what you think. There are monsters in this room and the fog takes the form of the monsters, the hero attacks, not knowing if it is an actual monster or just a likeness, so he rolls the dice to see which he attacks.
If the fog is taking on likenesses of monsters, one could assume that it would continue to do such even after all monsters in the room are defeated. How would the heroes know they are safe if the fog continues to form images of monsters.
I guess the hero could still technically search for treasure despite being somewhat visually impaired. Once the monsters stop attacking they could assume all real monsters are dead... but this would be very fitting if the hero were to draw a Wandering monster card.

Yes treasure can be searched for within both rules. I don't clutter my original version of the game with mods and per the rules there is no slipping toward the middle. There are lots of ways to add some kind of slipping mechanism but a black shield resulting in perma death is too barsh in my opinion.
Unless you specify your version I'm going by the US rules.

I don't disagree with that. Playtesting through this, I've witnessed a character falling over the edge and it was concerning. If it was just a mercenary I wouldn't've minded so much.
Although I feel the consequences on bad dice rolling is way too harsh, the chasm itself should allow some probably of falling into it.

Actually, this is precisely what the instructions on The Frozen Horror details:

"The ice ledge that surrounds the crevasse is very slippery. When a Hero steps through a door and moves onto his first square in this room, he must roll 1 combat die. The Hero is safe and can continue moving if a skull or white shield is rolled. If a black shield is rolled, however, the Hero begins slipping into the crevasse, suffering 1 Body Point of damage. The Hero must immediately roll another combat die. If another black shield is rolled, the Hero plummets into the crevasse, never to be seen again. Any other roll means the Hero returns to the square in which he entered the room, ending his turn. At the beginning of any turn in which a Hero is in this room, he must first roll to see if he slips into the crevasse."

Notes are at Quest 4, marker E. As it is, it occurs in Quest 4, Quest 6 and in Quest 8, where the ones in Quest 6 and in Quest 8 are mandatory to pass. In Quest 6 the exit is behind it and in Quest 8, a quest objective is located behind it - and given the amount of monsters behind it, it probably requires the entire group to clear it; so all players would need to travel through it twice, unless the Wizard or Elf uses Pass Through Rock on someone.

Note that there are Spells and Artifacts that can prevent or mitigate this slipping, too. Snowshoes of Speed (found in Quest 4) negate the slipping, and through the Ice Bridge spell (spell scroll), you could cover the crevasse with Magic Ice. Personally, I would also rule that the Skate spell can be used to safely navigate the Icy Ledge. Spell scrolls are found throughout The Frozen Horror quests, but are random and so availability may vary.

If you include the elf spells, you can also flashback a dead character back into life. That one's probably needed at least for the part where the heroes cross the ledge twice.

I am still thinking about this, because I hate of instant death stuff.
Even the less dangerous falling block traps behind doors are somewhat no-no for me (and you decide yourself if you step in or out when it comes down).

So for the ice ledge, I think there must be a solution somehow.

Well, for such a scenario, hopefully the Elf will have his "Flashback" spell handy. I would also allow Future Sight to reroll for slippage, but this one would have to be cast before use.
