Monsters never trigger traps, but they can be affected by them afterward (ie: blocked by falling block that was sprung, defend/attack with one less while sitting in sprung pit trap).

the hero will enter the room, the trap will be revealed, so the hero will step back out of the room and will wait the trap to explode on Zargon's turn killing the monsters (and no damage for the Heroes).

But in the 1990 UK rules this was also dropped so Wizards of Morcar was unlikely to have intended to have the no going back on your steps. I haven't played Wizards of Morcar quests for a long time but I think, similar to the Barbarian Quest pack it had some lack of playtesting issues.
Still, I think Fireburst traps are not useless if the hero decided to gamble and try to get to the next room, in some cases the door is blocked by a monster or else it leads to a room with another fire burst trap. But once they're familiar with it they're better off just going back and waiting.

Depends. Was the first release of 1989 a small game and then the big mainstream release was the following year in Europe? Or was the 2nd edition a kind of small update that sold fewer copies? I guess Advanced Quest could be considered a kind of third edition, but really more of an addon to the 2nd edition only (and sold fewer units, a kind of special edition).

Perhaps they simply didn't account for the differences that 1st and 2nd edition players would assume when playing the expansion!

Unfortunately I don't have data on this but HeroQuest sold well into the 90s so most of those will be 2nd edition. The ad campaign featuring the "Broadsword" we all know and love was released in 1991 so people who discovered it through that will have the 1990 edition and if you look on eBay in the UK or Ireland the 1990 edition is far more common (an easy way to tell is if Cloak of Protection or Bracers are shown). So I imagine the majority of non-US English speaking players will have the version allowing back-tracking. Can some non-English speaking people verify if back-tracking was not allowed in their editions?

Advanced Quest I suppose technically is a 3rd edition but the cards and books are identical to 2nd and have the same copyright year. Just additional miniatures, that quest leaflet and a new box (which is taller) are all that's different. So more like 2nd+ or 2.1 than 3rd.

I think we should consider that the QP designers were taking elements from ATOH and WOM, but were not copying everything exactly as it was. I think we would make a mistake to take the fireburst trap and just use it as it is. Especially since we know it has issues as it is.
For all we know, they could have reused the tile and the name, changing everything else. I’m pretty sure we could come up with something more interesting than the original one, but let’s say we want to keep it as close as possible to “canon”.
I think we can just make one or two little tweaks to the EU design to increase its dangerousness. Maybe we don’t want to go full Elf and Barbarian hard, but it should still be challenging. Being “Oook, time to say goodbye!” when you see it and backtracking is not challenging. The risk is that after the first one, or after the first round of playing, it would be useless.
There are two ways out, in my humble opinion:
1) place it strategically on the map, being so that it can’t be avoided (but this may mean changing the original maps or adding falling blocks, etc);
2) make it explode randomly (like, it is announced after the first hero finishes his movement, and the DM secretly rolls after how many turns it will explode - could be 1d6 representing the heroes+Zargon turns, so it would most likely explode after at least one full cycle, sometimes right away or damaging at least the first hero).
Other options, while cool, would probably bring too many changes to the original gameplay (introducing no backtracking, no damage to monsters, etc).

I stick with my opinion, treat this trap as if it was a normal trap with the only difference being that it explodes and hits everyone and can be dispell by Tempest spell.
It can be researched like a normal trap.

This should not change the rules and maps.

To me this makes the most sense and requires the minimum changes.

Would it be too early to get some estimates on how many pages are left to be scanned (or percentages) and rough estimates for when that would be completed, Luca?

Also, any word on other pieces that might be out there that weren't part of the main haul?

Hey Kurgan, scanning is complete for the 4 packs as of now. Multiple backups made too! :D
We’re still waiting to get a private section to start sharing the relevant material.

Nothing else for the next 30 years it seems: I asked the seller about the second draft for the Dwarf pack (he rewrote it), since there are a couple of pages attached to a letter, but apparently it was sent to “Hasbro” and they never returned it due to the end of the HQ line. I think it’s in the hands (or better yet, in the basement) of Mike Gray. There are two other Hasbro exec cited in the docs, but I think Mike G. was the first one to get the material. So, yeah, I wouldn’t hold my breath. But if someone has contacts at Restoration Games…
The good thing is that probably some parts of the package are also single copies, so even Hasbro might not have a copy of the final drafts of the WQP.
