Tracking multiple body points.

Postby Draven » April 14th, 2011, 4:41 pm

Initially using uk rules, keeping track of body points wasnt a problem, cos they only had one. But since changing over to US rules, I now have to track the body points. I know that there are tiles for this, (which I printed off), but I didnt really like using them.
I have been trying to keep track of each monsters bp on paper, but this gets awkward when you may have 4 fimirs in the same room. I thought back to the variable chart used in the uk version of Ogre Horde to track ogre points. I got to thinking, why not have a variant on that. I could have a fimir chart where I have a row of boxes, where every 2nd box is marked. Every time a fimir is hit, I tick a box. When I tick a marked box, that fimir dies. Chaos warriors, would obviously have every third box marked as they have 3 body points.
It give each character 'variable' points, but is fair in that there are a set number of points for each monster type.

I'm not really sure what you're explaining, to be honest. I do like the idea of using the little "tick boxes", but not
sure how that would be different from just simply keeping track of the body points by writing them down.

That's what I usually do. whatever creatures are in the combat...I just use a sheet of paper. I write down the
creature type (with a number by it if there are more than one), and just mark off how many body points of
damage each takes, and when they die, I remove them and cross them through on the sheet of paper.

I find that if you paint the monsters. It makes it a little easier. Then the fimir with the bloodstained axe has already been wonded while the one with the black chestplate still has full body points. It takes a lot, let me say that again, A LOT of spare time, and a couple of $$ (to get the paint and brushes) but the results look amazing and does make playing more fun.

With the Ogre body point tracker in against the Ogre Horde, it didn't matter how many monsters you were facing. It had a random number of boxes, i.e.

000x0000x00000x00x0x0000x000

(Circles are open boxes and x's are kill boxes)

Each damage you do on any Ogre gets represented here. For this example, let's say there are 3 Ogres on the board and squaring off with the Heroes)

First Round
Barbarian Attacks Ogre #1 for 3 bp. Dwarf Attacks Ogre #2 for 1 bp (and Ogre #2 dies). Elf Attacks Ogre #3 for two bp. Wizards attacks Ogre #1 for 2 bp.

Next round
Barbarian attacks Ogre #1 for 2 bp (still alive). dwarf attacks Ogre #3 for 1bp (and Ogre #3 dies). Then finally Elf Attacks Ogre #1 for 6bp and then it finally dies.

That is how the variable Body Point Tracker works. Essentially Ogre #1 had 11 body points while Ogre #2 had 1 bp and Ogre #3 had 4 Bp.

In theory, if a new ogre (or whatever monster) kept popping on the board and engaging the heroes, a single monster could have a seemingly unending supply of body points (odds are low, but not out of the question).

In my book, possibly 'more realistic', but hardly predictable. why not just say that ogres have (for example) 6 Body Points, and be done with it. In conclusion, I prefer the predicatble bp count and just suck it up and use the friggin skull tiles. JMO

Phoenix explains the variable body rule bettet than me by using the 00x000x000x00x0000 where x shows the kill points.
My suggestion was to have a fimir chart if you are facing multiple fimirs. 0x0x0x0x0x. Every 2 body points results in a kill. Chaos warriors with 3 bp would be 00x00x00x00x00x. Will give it a few run outs and see if it makes it any easier.

It sounds interesting. Much less book keeping. You could even just have a couple of charts. One for all 2 bp monsters (Fimir and Mummy) and one for all 3 bp monsters (CW and Gargoyle).

I use little dices with 6 faces to show how many body points left to a creature. You can find a lot of these dices in game workshop shop. (6-7 Euros)

It is very useful, they are very little. The idea came from warhammer quest

A little trick I've learned from playing games like D&D and Star Wars Saga edition... get some tiny dice like the ones that come in heroclix sets (you know those ones that are so small if you drop them they're pretty much gone forever). Take them and put different numbers showing on the bases. For example you now have Fimir #1 and Fimir #2, that way you know exactly which ones which. Here's some on ebay to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-100-Opaque-Tiny ... 5644053a7c

Also to give you an idea of how small these are for those that don't know.

For our games I made copies of the skull tile on 110# cardstock. I then poked 2 holes in the upper and ran a straightened paper clip through forming a loop. Bent the two ends down and I "hang" these on the character. I do this for heroes and monsters. Helps everyone keep up with everything. I am normally Zargon for our local games. You do not have to constantly wonder which heroes have damage. |_P

To track Body Points, place the matching monster card(s) and skull markers nearby. As a monster takes damage, place a skull marker on its card instead of under the figure. For multiple monsters, orient the skull markers on the monster card(s) to roughly match their placement in the room they are fighting in, creating stacks for individuals when necessary.
