We used 'special GenCon rules' for these sessions. Example: Instead of 'each hero gets to search each room once for treasure, traps, secret doors', a single search can take place for each location, but includes all three searches. A specially adopted map is utilized, as well. The idea isn't to have a classic HeroQuest game, per se, but to let new players experience that which we already know; which is how awesome a game HQ actually is. Last year all, but two, of the players I hosted were new to the game. One had played once at a convention in Connecticut, years ago and the other was an experienced Zargon, who had never played as a Hero. They both loved it!! And as far as I know, the rest enjoyed it as well. I also created a special GenCon treasure deck that included armory items just so they could experience some degree of 'leveling up'. I enjoy playing the game and found it interesting to see how these complete strangers work as a team. I had a blast!
