SKARSNIK

Chapter 6 - A Runt Spawned

Dark.Cold.Damp.A slick membrane gave way, and soft hands found wet soil. There was nothing thinking in the little mind that worked the hands, not yet, nothing except the impulse to dig, to go upwards.
The soil was moist and full of rocks that scratched his hands. The goblin runt struggled hard, lungs burning. Spots flickered in the black. His life was done almost as it begun.
A hand broke the surface, flapping madly in the air. The second followed, than a bald, pointy head. We’re there strong light in the cavern, the newly spawned goblin would have appeared a whitish green. But there was not. Only weak blue shine of glowsshrooms held back the dark, and all was dingy.
The runt pulled himself up out of the hole. A huge mushroom stood above his birthing-hole, wilting and black now it had served its purpose. The goblin lay on his back, panting. Scrabbling noises came from the cave all around him, other runts, pulling themselves out of the earth.
The runt was feeble. The soil in the cavern was thin and rocky. The light was dim. No orclings would be born there, only runty goblins and snotlings and squigs.

Do I have to go on......

Yes damnit. Start back at chapter 1 and read me the whole book, how can you leave me hanging like this?

I think I'm done with the bard now... Until we get to playtest it

wtf I love the druid now?!

She lost the yoga pants completely. The model is fine now.
Her abilities are very balanced in comparison to classic heroes.
A bit weaker than the elf, due to no metal armour, but higher damage output with a spell that can be regained.

wallydubbs wrote:It's Pixie I don't get: Heals 2BP on any hero or search. It's the "or search" that I don't get.
Search for traps and secret doors in line of sight? Couldn't the druid just perform that search herself without asking the pixie to do it?

When a hero searches, she just search the room/corridor she's actually in. She also only search for either traps OR secret doors (Searching for both at once is a house rule).
Potentially you'll be able to see several corridors and rooms at once and search for both traps and secret doors in all at them at once.
So the Pixie can basically function as a scanner sweep 8-)
Not super powerful, but situationally useful.
But F that anyways, because you are gonna need that heal to get your Shapeshift back. Using the Pixie to search is like using the Genie to open a door.

Doug Hopkins wrote:Nikki Dawes’s art features a tiger-like arm and claws, which inspired me to endow this new hero with a shapeshifting spell.

That's a terrible way to design! The first thing you learn in game design college is that form follows function.
Also notice that her entire theme is plants - None of her spells are plant based

I did some digging into Shauna Nakasone and Nikki Dawes (Facebook and Twitter). Honestly, not sure why these "guest" designers were invited to create characters. They are artsy-fartsy folk and for some circles that is okay, but with HQ...it just misses the mark. Their characters are really out of touch with HQ and their design is, well, lacking. They just don't fit. Really disappointing. And other forums, not just this one, feel the same. The good thing is, the Bard, Druid and "Warlock" are not really apart of the main game that will be marketed. The said part is, for those crowdfunding, the extra characters are not rewarding and likely are lending to the major slow down in the funding. It doesn't leave anything to really desire to push the funding further, ya' know. I would have preferred a Paladin, Witch Hunter (or Monster Hunter if the Witch Hunter is too GW) or a Sorceress or Enchantress. Even a Shapeshifter could be interesting if you just have to be really creative. Something of that sort. HQ is more straight forward and pulpy. Sorry, but these two designers feel more left-field than anything. Oddly, they feel more like political blue check marks rather than finding the right talent. Wanna be careful and clear here: gender isn't the issue from the game's end, but it does feel to be on the choice of designer end, if you take my meaning. I mean, pick the right people regardless of gender. HQ fans would have been nice. That guy Miguel Garcia Fernandez, or that guy from BardicBroadcast "the best part about HeroQuest is...". You know...FANS. Qualified gamers and contributors to the cause that have kept this alive when there wasn't a reboot on the horizon. Instead they go all Rian Johnson/Kathleen Kennedy on it: subverting expectations rather than fulfilling or exceeding. Just bad choices.

I did that as well. For Nikki Dawes I found that she has made artwork for a lot of D&D stuff. Okay, so she is actually a somebody in the industry. This is some sort of justified qualification.
Nikki Daves' Artstation wrote:Published works may be found in: D&D: Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, D&D: Icewind Dale - Rime of the Frostmaiden, D&D: Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and The Chronicles of Exandria: The Mighty Nein.

Even Teos Abadia has worked on several D&D projects.
But I could find absolutely no claim to fame on Shauna Nakasone. To the best of my knowledge she is a literally "who"?

Agreed, neither of these people bring any sort of wow!-factor like the Stephen Baker questbook. HE is a relevant guest designer.
Guest designers should be at least some what relevant or interesting to the players.
Bring back Iain McCaig as a guest artist. That guy is a freaking rock star today! Just pay the man to do a single character drawing.
$5 stretch goal: New cover by Les Edwards. THAT would be awesome. A man can dream...

I had the exact same thought. Small halfling BUT DANGEROUS. Monster orc BUT FUNNY BARD. Subverting expectations is a bad move when you want to bank in on nostalgia. STAR WARS-y indeed.

Shauna Nakasone Also has an Artstation account https://www.artstation.com/flyingsciurus and has done art for a broad spectrum of art. Most recently DND.

Her portfolio doesn't strike me as a logical choice for HQ. Looks comic booky. It reminds me of an epic fail at Marvel. https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/ ... w-warriors

While I agree with you that her art isn’t in alignment with the classic HeroQuest, it does have substantial alignment with the art design for the current box. And she did work for DnD, another Hasbro property, so a corporation that they’ve created artwork for is asking them to do additional artwork.

Perhaps this is an attempt to bring folks from the DnD side over to the classic HeroQuest side? Expanding the player base that way?

Though, if they’re going to do a DnD heroes group ... it would have been nice if they did 4 of them. So we could keep them separate from the classic heroes.

To be fair, I’m not entirely sold on the “Black Desert”/ Japanese animated look for the elf. But it’s a reasonably common look these days in high fantasy.

During that live stream Joe Manganiello teased that he was making a quest book for $4m. Even Joe I think might not be a great choice to with a HQ quest. I've seen him involved a lot in the D&D community. I great that he would bring too much D&D flavour to the game.

But the problem is that the game is being remade by the people behind D&D, so it makes sense that they would use the talent that they have available. I count it a blessing that they at least decided to work with one person from the original game.

Well thought out response. It makes sense. Originally, it was designed to usher young ones into Warhammer (and unofficially into DnD). I guess since Hasbro has it, it will usher into DnD (and unofficially Warhammer). I get it.

I did indeed find her artstation. But honestly look at it...
There are like 20 pictures. 5 that could perhaps be D&D fanart?
Her artstyle is all over the place.

That page is not doing a good job of convincing me this isn't some absolute nobody.

Not trying to *lemony goodness* on her; just calling it like I see it. My point being that it's random to pull her in as a guest artist and expect people to be excited.
Nobody is going "fraggle yeah! Shauna Nakasone is designing a hero"!

What would have been cool is to have Les Edwards design a character. However... that didn’t happen.
