Personally, I think in a setting with a male villain called the "Witch Lord", that the gender distinction argument for Warlock being a male witch loses all of it's ground. While in the real world those terms are gendered, in the HeroQuest world they don't seem to be, and that's fine. Many of the new customers finding HeroQuest are going to be familiar with D&D these days as well, where Warlock just means "Person that gets their magic from a powerful magical entity", and the term won't be out of place being used that way here for them.
Just my
a fair point.
Witch seems a little more gender neutral to me than Warlock although that one still is heavily slanted towards females generally in language history let alone gaming. It is similar to saying the term "mankind" includes females and "witchcraft" includes male practitioners.
Warlock has always been male in it's etymology as far as I know. "Lord" is very male oriented term so helped define that character even if the term "witch" seemed a slight gender flex in Witch Lord. But you are right, can't quibble the gender of warlock with "witch lord" ambiguous in the original product.
I have been playing D&D since the early 80's, HeroQuest since it's release in the 90's, so 30+ years worth of fantasy roleplay and that is what the terms witch and warlock conjure for me, distinct genders. Even though I have bought much of the 5E D&D I haven't played it at all and have yet to read through most of it as well; interesting the term warlock has been gender neutralized you say, I assume in 5e? I played AD&D and AD&D 2nd edition but have collected OD&D, Basic D&D, 3rd edition and most of the 5th (only own one 4th ed D&D book didn't care for that edition at all) so I would consider myself an experienced veteran gamer and this is the first I have heard of it. perhaps you are right and younger generations view the term completely differently (obviously the designer does) if that is what roleplaying or video games define it now as.
