We have some strong opinions going on, but so far nothing out of bounds. I suggest we leave it at that. This conversation is derailing a great thread.

Remember, it's okay to be critical of design decisions. Just be respectful and play the ball and not the (wo)man.

I for one am not impressed by the new quest where you explore ancient magical orc civilization and have orcs joining your party.
Why does everybody need to ruin orcs by making them noble, but misunderstood creatures?
Games Workshop seems like the only company left that just embraces orcs as violent destructive hooligans.

Right! What's an orc without his WAAAUGH!
I'm totally okay with the new orcs, but that's because I'm going to call them something else and give them new stats, and use my original orcs as orcs! :D

You can say that again, warhammer orks, gretchin, snots, squigs are the best. The new sculpts are really jarring if you play with a old world/warhammer mind frame like i do.

Why can't orcs just be sentient war-mushrooms like the good old days?
...
Well at least semi-sentient. :-)

I personally don't feel like World of Warcraft should define what Orcs (or elves or anything else) are for the whole world, but in normie-land (tm) I'm guessing that's what people automatically think of. You had this game, based on a 90's pc RTS that is being played by millions of people. I like the square jawed, smirking chaos orcs of the original. At least we didn't get zombies patterned after the Walking Dead and Mummies modeled on the Brendan Frasier movies (then again, where is the female Mummy based on the Tom Cruise flop I ask you?). They're giving people what they expect to see.

It's an odd mixture... are they going for the hardcore, nostalgic "now grown up with their own kids" HeroQuest superfans... or the citizens of normie-land (tm) unfamiliar with this stuff? I've said many times I want the "just looking for something new for family game night" shoppers to consider this for purchase. But that doesn't mean we have to pander to them either. The box artwork is what sells it more than anything else. Revamping and remaking a beloved old franchise is a tricky, delicate business. So far I'm impressed with many of the positive steps they've taken. But they could do more...

What sold Hero Quest for us back in the day? Because back then RPGs were seen as the domain of hardcore hobbyists and basement nerds. Instead of having to buy a bunch of books or collect (and paint) a bunch of miniatures, it gave it to you all in one big box with fairly simple instructions that let you get into a game fairly quickly. No complex calculations or fiddling with lots of extra components, just some 3d minatures, some cards, and a board like any other board game. It gave casual ordinary folks a path into the RPG gaming world. And if they wanted to just stay there (instead of converting into a hardcore collector/modder basement book guru) they could. And play monopoly and clue next month.

You know, here's another idea. If this is going to be an ongoing project, imagine they could reel Games Workshop back in to do supplemental releases... "Classic" miniature replacements more like the old style (in similar detail and scale)? Maybe with square bases? C'mon Jabba, I mean Hasbro, you're throwing away a fortune, don't be a fool!

Or maybe it will be up to us fan modders to create that equivalent. In the end what are you left with? A slightly modified board, since making new boards seems like one of the more challenging things here (though to be fair we have had some fantastic 3d boards created.. they just end up being heavy and taking up a lot more space that not everybody can handle).

Lego Heroquest? Good idea. As good as any I've heard in awhile. Smaller (but not that much smaller) than the original scale.

Games Workshops don't do oldschol miniatures since 1992 approssimatively. Maybe Wargames Foundry still use that style.
Personally, I don't need an official company to write new quests for me. A lot of us are perfectly able to write new content that is a lot more interesting to play.

I just deleted the whole thing. I'm absolutely not a fan of deleting posts, but we are all here to talk about HeroQuest and that conversation was getting in the way of that.
I urge everybody to stay polite and respectful. Both to developers and other Inn members. Even the ones you disagree with. Especially the ones you disagree with.

Moving on!

Agreed... but! I think in many ways an expansion like Wizards of Morcar was really good. The campaign was pretty short, but it gave us an handful of new creatures, a new concept with the mercenaries and last but not least a whole load of new spells.
It was much more a new toolbox than a campaign. That's what I'm really hoping for. Lot's of new tools.
Tools that are uniform in execution and artstyle.

Seriously, I'd think I'd almost take a card pack with new equipment, artifacts and spell schools over a a remake of the original expansions.

FainFlynn wrote:So anywho (take 2),

Is it wrong that I’m excited for updated dice?? I think I remember reading that their not just painted, but instead carved into the dice. Carved is the wrong word, so is embossed. Debossed?? Either way, getting a second set is dope.

Were the old dice made of wood? There was something so satisfying with how the rolled. I hope they can recreate the feel of the original dice. I know that seems silly or inconsequential. But the dice always stood out to me.

I'm of a split opinion on the new dice. I like the new black shield and white shield icons. The new skulls I don't like so much. The style is a strong resemblance to the spanish sugar-skull (just without the decorations). In my mind that style just doesn't fit with the high-fantasy of HeroQuest. It's not a dealbreaker by any means, but I like to old skulls waaay better.

I only have one set of the original HeroQuest dice that happened to come with a set that I bought off of ebay. I was quite pleased to find that they appeared to be originals, still in their unbroken plastic wrap, and in pristine condition. I couldn't bring myself to open the package, they were to pretty, too preserved, and I didn't want to mess that up!
So... I scoured the internet for HeroQuest dice, the only ones I came across that weren't killer expensive were from a guy that makes custom dice on Etsy. I got them, and despite the dice facing being wrong, and not even matching each other, and icons being off-center, and the lazer engraving having minor imperfections.... I'm still pretty happy with them. I painted them too. Here, check 'em out:

Engraved dice! That's a new one!

In other news, you got your pair of "wolverine" goblins, I see...

If they would just open up some add-ons, the price would skyrocket.
