I, for one, welcome our new Hasbro overlords!

You beat me to it!

And yes, 14 posts to Champion on these Hero Quest forums (just like 14 QUESTS to become a champion after beating the Game System in the actual game of Hero Quest). |_P

A few more images, for those who hadn't seen... (personally in most cases I like the card art more than the miniature sculpts)

I think my post was kinda overlooked but I had a couple of concerns.

With the new game being released we can assume that everything thing is copyrighted and Hasbro will probably be harsh on their trademarks being infringed on so are we going to discuss things here on the forums, post the material, scan it?
We have had the luxury of not having to worry about this until now and I know we will all want to discuss the new version. Do we need to set up some rules or something?

Ha, I haven't thought about this game in a long time. I used to own it, don't think we ever played it.

Kurgan wrote:But the explanation that it's a D&D tie in makes sense. They want this to be a gateway drug into more money, when to many of us, HQ is its own thing, and doesn't need to be a stepping stone or training wheels for something else.

The base game is already a gateway drug though, all they need to do to make more money is release more expansions, not tie it in with something different.

I vaguely remember finding an old notebook from my parents full of homebrew rules for mixing HeroQuest and Battlemasters together into one giant game. I don't know how they did it, I was too young back then to really understand it much. I should see if they still have that somewhere, would be interesting to look at.

Agreed. The guy I bought my HQ set from most recently was selling his because his son was more into Battlemasters. I never played it, but the basic concept seems to be doing for wargames what HQ did for tabletop RPGs, and the plot is the war between the Emperor's army vs. the Chaos army. So it could be the final battle after the Quests or what's going on in between the Quest packs with Zargon fighting the Empire. I haven't looked deeply into it, but sounds like there's potential there. Good luck getting a complete set for a decent price online though!

Me too. I think I'm going to use the new board and cards with old monsters... and maybe the new female heroes.

The Barbarian card with the humongous sword is just plain daft though. That is never going to get anywhere near my gaming table. Likewise with the new dodgy orc miniatures. Which is fine I guess, because Hasbro doesn’t want their product anywhere near my non-American gaming table either

Discuss things here on the Inn-forums? Hell yes! There are literally no laws that prevent that.

Posting materials? Everything that is freely available on the Internet can be posted. Like several images from the campaign already have been.

Hosting/posting scans? I'm afraid that's a big no-no. As much as I want our American friends to scan everything and share it, I think that would be suicide for Ye Olde Inn.
On the other hand I have no worries about all the existing material here on the site, since that's all Ye Olde HeroQuest stuff. Hasbro wouldn't want to piss off their biggest hard core community.

Agreed. In the end, when we own it, we paint it, we design it, we modify it. When I get it, if I like what they have done, I play it that way. If I don't, I modify it. You can always replace pieces or whatever. I'm not worried about this. To be honest, I have daughters and they really want to play the original. They want to play with some female characters. I understand. So I bought and painted some female characters. My buddy's two boys who like to play prefer to play with male characters. I understand. I have male characters.

Honestly, this argument isn't really worth getting into over this. Everything is so political. This is escapism for me, not politics. If you don't like it, then don't buy it. If I see what I don't like on TV I change the channel. I don't have to scream, throw a fit or cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war. I may not like some things, sure, but there is a time and place for this energy to be spent fighting these things and THIS isn't really it.

I said this yesterday on this forum when there was concern about the "female" warlock: "I know how you feel, but let's not see demons where none MAY exist. (I could be wrong).

Also, the idea of a "female" warlock vs, "witch". Remember that one of the main enemies is the "Witch" Lord (and he is male). I wouldn't worry to much about it. We all modify our games anyway and will likely do it here too. It's a game and you bring it in your house. You define your household not someone else's "PC-ness". If I don't like the mess on my TV because of it's politics, I change the channel. I don't have to rage, protest or cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.

And if I prefer old school, I PLAY old school. Ya' know? I don't like PC-ness overall because of the stigma that comes with it. At the same time, I don't like to not validate how people feel. Not good for communciation. In other words, I have to be responsible for me and not fall victim to assumptions (which I have been guilty of; I'm human).

No worries. Let's just have some fun when it gets here. I'm about gaming for escapism. I don't need or desire all of this political mess. If they make it a female and I like it, I play with it. If I don't, I replace the piece, storyline, etc. It's my toy. I can do whatever I want. It's in the imagination. ;) "

Good point about the Witch Lord. I retract my previous argument. This is Bretonnia, not earth (or even middle-earth), so it doesn't have to be the same.

Despite the gaming conventions, there is a lot of freedom given to the player in their style, choosing and naming their character, picking spells, etc. It doesn't say how your character has to vote, what their religion is, etc. I agree, games like this are meant for escapism. Their intended audience is clear (Heroquest fans - people who love board games, rpgs, fantasy or a combination thereof). At the same time I think appealing to new fans is important too, but that doesn't mean compromising the product to get people who don't like HeroQuest to change their mind. We already did something back in the day which was have a miniature represent something it wasn't (using the figure that is clearly the Witch Lord to represent Sir Ragnar, or a renegade Wizard). There was never anything stopping a player from using a Chaos Warrior or Fimir to represent a beautiful princess or whatever. They did give us an official female Elf and female Barbarian back in the day as an option, and I like the fact that they didn't look identical to the male version (with different chest/face/legs).... at least if you were in North America. But I am really miffed they didn't give us female zombies for which I'm going to now protest... (j/k)

Back when I thought this was going to be a computer (mobile) game, I was "worried" because they very well could have forced a certain type of play. They would have been able to control everything right down to the last pixel.

As it is, they are selling us a box of props. We can do whatever we want with them, including adding and subtracting, modifying to our liking... and there is already a rich legacy and community with custom rules, characters, quests, to mix, match, remix, etc. to our liking. Even so, they have chosen to give us pretty much the same thing we're already familiar with, just re-designed, so unless they're going to have official Hero Quest tournaments or something, nothing has changed except more sets will be available in this new style.

Even the basic rules in a region are ambiguous enough in places that just about everyone has a different spin on it, and that's cool. You can say there's a "canonical" color scheme for each character (going by the box or card art) but there was nothing forcing you to paint your figures that precise way. I left mine the base solid colors all these years (and I really hope they do give us a set of basic colors instead of all grays in the final release).
