I'm in at Mythic level. I personally don't back kickstarters until they are goal reached and a sure thing. I understand why Hasbro did it, it's the best advertising to the modern gaming community and it is free. On top of that they can cover production costs with sure thing sales, rather than developing, producing, and advertising on their own dime, hoping only after they recoup costs to then to excite the HQ fans and perhaps entice new customers with potential purchases.
I seriously doubt we will see this on shelves at the local grocery store or box store like Walmart or Target (I know for sure I bought the original quest packs at Shopko and Kmart.) The price, box style and miniatures style are obviously directed at game store hardcore gamers and not the general public. You likely aren't going to see a game like Conan (similar box style, contents, and price) or Axis and Allies, or Galaxy Trucker at those types of stores on sale for the casual consumer anymore; it is way beyond impulse buy price of a 20 dollar Jumanji game or 15 dollar Monopoly. This is a hobby shop/games specialist shop product. Most D&D products don't hit those stores either, just an introduction basic box.
I didn't do the new Dark Tower board game kickstarter and that one still never made it to stores (anybody get it?) but I did do the new Fireball Island board game to go with my own vintage 80's original, and got all of the expansion packs and promo only extras. That game was more of an homage with different game play rather than mostly a reprint/modern update as this one seems to be. But what surprised me was many game stores in my area bought in at the kickstarter for Fireball island and then had several copies of the exclusives available in their retail stores as soon as 6 months later. The basic game and later expansions were on sale at game stores not long after that. They even continued to develop and release new expansions. I hope that us the case here, sure reprint with minor changes all of the old HeroQuest quest packs, but keep it going with new expansions and adventures. I had all of the original US releases as a teen, but I didn't even know about the different European/Australian original releases until decades later as an adult collector. I hope that whatever is finally released publicly in stores is released worldwide and not a region exclusive. Hasbro is big, they gobbled up all of the other game companies so I'm certain this will be on game store shelves eventually.
I prefer the original art and sculpt style but fully understand who they are marketing to with the modern aesthetic and the legal reasons for distancing from Games Workshop influence. I am sad that the Warhammer World will not be a part of this new HeroQuest, it always was to me, and I think the evidence makes that clear with several references.
I am extremely excited for this eventual release. A year is a very long time to wait, but worth it to have my HeroQuest collection complete with all products ever released (and some prototypes never released like the NES cart) again.
Even with the exact same dungeon layouts (so far presumably based on everything we have heard from Hasbro so far) I see this as an opportunity to get new fans playing, perhaps even HQ nights at the local game store and fan clubs springing up. HeroQuest will be bigger than ever before, and old grognards who have and played the original for decades will be lords and gods among them. All assuming the pandemic wears down and we can get back to gaming sessions with groups again, of course.
I wonder what exactly the impact on value of the old sets will be...depreciate considerably or shoot through the roof? Going by Star Wars figures or Masters of the Universe toys or D&D game products, new releases only increased interest in the vintage material greatly increasing value.
The quest packs already go for ridiculous amounts now. I am glad I got two complete sets (for me and my twin brother) before it went too nuts, I mean after all it is just a board game (the best there ever was.)
