Ehhh....?

What Chaos Dread magic is this? (And so much to unpack here!)

OK, I understand that they had to lean away from the GamesWorkshop content, but holy hell. Those are some crazy changes -- good and bad.

As much as love the inclusion of Heroines in the game, that should not be a bonus feature. I do have to hand it to then for having female Orcs and Goblins. (That is more than I can say about about the Warhammer World... I would ask about that, but I know I'm saving my sanity with my ignorance on that topic.)

Goddamn! I hate the new Elf! I hate the Elf Heroin! I hate the bonus Elf Hero! I HATE THOSE GODDAMN LONG EARS! (My one true weakness: Deedlit's donkey ears.) Also, I hate those Wayne Reynolds-styled Goblins! (With the way he draws faces, his art makes me nauseous -- like flayed skin wiaped on skulls!) The Dwarf looks kinda weird. I can totally live with the Abomination. The Skeleton scythe look a little silly. Otherwise the other miniatures look good. I have to give them kudos for having fully-plastic, detailed doors/furniture. (Similar to the one I have been printing out.) Nice touch with the White and Black Shield on the Weapon Rack.

The card art is good, and I like how they rework some of the small bits, like adding a skeleton to the background of the Spirit Blade. (I did like how the old card set had random dudes and was annoyed by how they added the Heroes and Men-at-Arms to the art of the Quest Packs.) The card backs on the other hand look too bright and clean for my liking, much like the art in too many HQ-like game sets. I really love that they are using the old HQ map art from the old set, with its dark, dingy basement look strewn of vermin, random debris and old blood.

They got my internist with a Stephen Baker Quest Book, along with this "The Spirit Queen's Torment" Quest Book. On the other hand, the Druid and Halfling Warlock bonus Heroines thrown into the stretch goal pile can booger-off! (Dammit! Why is everyone trying to turn HeroQuest, and everything else, into D&D! I like D&D, but If I want to play D&D, I would play D&D! What I don't need is some jackass putting a Drizzt-clone or D&D-styled Ranger in the game and act like the game is somehow better for it! I welcome new monsters and Heroes/Heroines, but make it something new and interesting!)

P.S. I'm not a backer-type person. I rather buy a finished product.

I'd rather they focus on releasing a quality product with adequate shelf stock for people to buy at a reasonable price, as opposed to little trinkets for deep pocket "backers," personally. But $$$$

Well said. I too would rather a finished product (as opposed to "donating" for something that might never come or live up to expectations in the final analysis). Again I'll say it, despite the usual Kickstarter hype/greed meta-game, my biggest concern for this was that it would "ruin" the game. I imagined all sorts of things... like using D&D style Dice, or "5 Minute Dungeon" style humor/art, or the dreaded mobile integration. I can live with changes like this, and if you invited me over to play on your set, I wouldn't mind at all. I might even (if it were on sale) buy it as a gift for a friend some day. But Would I invest myself? Hell no. There's nothing really here for me. If I didn't already have a decent set of Reaper Minis to serve as my female heroines, etc. I might think otherwise. But if it gets more Hero Quest enthusiasts out there, I'm all for it.

Now this will solve the (insert crappy politics here) weirdos complaining about racist Elves and Orcs. You can paint them whatever "colors" you want! But seriously, where are the female Dread Warriors? (Two lumps of green stuff and you're set, right?).

I don't know what it is. I'll follow it, though, maybe Stephen Baker's quest book is good. I'd like to make contact and present him with Whitebeard's Dungeons Dark and Mohawks Questimator.

I know that this new version won't be "my" HeroQuest. I have my version (though, you know, still working on printing out new tiles and cards and minis and such) and I will forever treasure it and the memories that I have associated with it and the doorways it opened for me when I was young.

But I'm pretty happy that this is basically just an updated version with seemingly little changed except for aesthetics. I means that, at heart, it should still be the same game. And that means that there are all kinds of newer players and younger generations who will have their own HeroQuest and get to experience their version of it. I mean, the classic art was a big part of the appeal to me, but the gameplay is what made it fun, and I don't believe that they've changed that. So I hope it gets a ton of people excited and I hope this becomes a big hit and a lot of new players all over get to enjoy what I have for years. And I hope this campaign raises enough money that they do decide to make it for and ship it to international audiences so they can also share the love.

So not "my" HeroQuest but I feel like I'd happy to call it HeroQuest and it seems like a fine choice to carry on the legacy. And because of that, I'll probably back it.

My dream would be that this would appear in mainstream stores someday, say at a discount ($50-70). If it remains a mail away/internet exclusive or sold in high end game shops only, then it will be severally limited. They need to release the minis pre-colored (red for heroes, off white for undead, green for greenskins, and gray for everything else) and that will grant it appeal beyond the Warhammer/hobbyists/collectors and folks like us.

If they want it to be mainstream and not a "limited edition geeks only" type of thing, that is. And if they want to throw up a new video game version after all is said and done, great.

The original HeroQuest was MADE for regular board gamers, as a gateway into other types of role playing (if they wanted). Not hardcore D&D, Warhammer painters, etc.

Yeah, it's a nostalgia product, but they really need to market this to the mainstream, not just to internet money-marks (no offense, internet money-marks).

I don't see why it would need to be (dividing the community that is). You just would have a new gallery of people painting the new minis (they are even more "meant to be painted" than the originals), and people scalping the sets on Ebay. The rules are the same, everything's the same. I hate to compare it to the shot-for-shot remake of Psycho.. I guess it's not really the same because this would (potentially) put the base game into the hands of more players, put more sets out there in the wild than currently are.

I could be playing on my webcam with my old set with you and your new set and everything would be the same (you say "Dread" I say "Chaos" you say "Fish person" I say "Fimir"... we already don't have a problem with Morcar/Zargon and the NA/EU rules).

Of course if its produced in limited quantities, it might end up going for as much (or more) than the old sets. Collecting can ruin the fun sometimes. These were meant to be played!!

I'm glad of the other female heroes. They gave us a Female Elf and Barbarian back in the day and probably would have done the same with the Dwarf and Wizard had the series not petered out at that point (due perhaps to licensing issues as much as fan demand).

Every country that got the first game ought to be able to get these. I would LOVE to see the Japanese version get the remake treatment. How cool would that be?

 I thought the new Japanese version was presented by Hasbro, today! Look at the elf ears and weapon sizes...

That’s how I feel, I prefer my homebrew. However something that we here at the Inn should be celebrating wildly is that there are no rule changes, and therefore all our work making homebrews will be compatible with new players this brings.

:redheart: Our homebrews are not part of “old” Heroquest.

Maybe the golden age is just beginning; maybe we’ll get the Chronicles of Sir Ragnar completed! I wonder how much of a story he plays in the new quest books...
