Since I've never played it, my knowledge is limited to looking at pictures online (and I have a few of the miniature designs that others have modified into HeroQuest miniatures) and my skimming of the rulebook as to its intended connections to HQ.
When I first heard about BM I kind of imagined it was what was going on in the background or right after Kellar's Keep... the Emperor's armies were sacking the forces of Zargon and later fighting back against the Ogre horde. I guess in reality it's a seperate adventure of encroachment to the border lands. So is this invasion campaign what prompted the Emperor to enlist Mentor to seek out the four? Or was it just something that was happening in the background rather than the final battle that resulted after your exploits were over?
I sort of imagine that the Heroes are either conducting their special ops missions at the same time as the war effort is occurring elsewhere or perhaps the battles happen in between, with loses or victories being impacted by the Heroes' progress.
Even though set in the same Warhammer fantasy inspired world and designed largely by the same people (released after HeroQuest itself) it could be treated separately or take place any time, but bigger nerd historians than I can answer that definitively. Would I "use it"? Sure I guess...
I could imagine something like BM happening and it might be cool to play a game of it after playing through all of HQ but since it's a totally different type of game, it might not appeal to everyone (plus it is expensive to track down a complete set in decent condition). I absolutely do not have the floor space to play it at this point in time even if I had the desire to plunk down the cash on such a find. So to me it's just a neat little peak into some more related lore, similar to hearing about Advanced Hero Quest.
Will Hasbro revive BattleMasters next? Who knows. I don't think it ever achieve the same level of popularity and isn't so ingrained in public consciousness, at least over here in the states.
