The skull tiles have always been an issue when playing with a crowded board and never really made sense to me. I just use a D6 like in 40K to track body points once damage is inflicted. Sure a nice cool custom base from AH would be ideal but I doubt they'd ever make it. Can always hope though as they have done more than we'd of ever thought so maybe I'm wrong

Not sure how relevant it is to Heroquest but Marvel legends will be going to a "preorder window" model instead of Haslab.
Basically, a figure or something will be put up and people will only have a short preorder window to get it. It doesnt have to reach a certain level of units sold in order to fund. Every preorder placed will get the item on offer.

If AH were to go this route in the future, I think I would like it for other games they plan on doing or one off HQ items. I feel it's better than the Haslab model.

Daedalus wrote:I like the idea for rims fitted to the bases of mercenaries, but why stop there? They'd work well with any monster for tracking Body Points. Is it just me, or do loads of us playing HeroQuest dispense with placing skull tiles under monster figures? I would like to see 6 to 8 differently colored rims. Cards with sections of matching colors would pair off with the appropriate monster card so that skull tiles could then be more easily placed there. That should be faster and way more convenient then stretching over the Zargon screen to fiddle with figures and tiles on a crowded gameboard each time a monster is damaged.

Kurgan wrote:Once again you'd want something that works for the multi-body point large monsters with double wide bases (but no place to put the tiles, unlike the giant wolves where you can easily put them on top of the "Surfboard").

I think only giant wolves come in a multiple set, so the BPs of other, unique large monsters can simply be tracked on their monster cards. I think your suggestion for placing skull tiles on the "surfboard" of giant wolves is a solid one though, both in usefulness and stability.

I remember tracking Wounds in Warhammerquest in similar fashion, though the d6 dice supplied for that purpose were tinier. Better than skull tiles, but a bit crowded and immersion-breaking for me.

Why you may be correct that an alternative BP-tracking method is a pipe-dream, no harm in bringing attention to a weakness of the 90s design. Heck, it isn't hard to paint the edge of the bases or even make colored tiles to place under the round bases. Might be worth it if some blue-tack held it in place.

Ah, putting a spare D6 (taken from Frozen Horror perhaps) on the monster card for these bosses makes sense, as long as it is placed near the board so that the hero players can easily see it.

I've found these wound trackers work well and they are not too immersion breaking. Works with a random d6. For HQ, you need a one or two dice holder only.

Years back I had posted in the Other Games Room about wanting a way to play a HeroScape-HeroQuest crossover. Now Kurgan has reported this idea was intimated by Avalon Hill at Gen Con. So hell yeah, I could support that.

Assuming that they do revive, revise, and produce the abandoned Dwarf and Wizard quest packs, I find it unlikely they would continue that theme with the new hero classes. While the symmetry of it would be nice, the fact that the new heroes start off with extra powers beyond what's available to the base 4 would make it redundant to create specific quest packs for them. Start giving unique artifacts to the new characters and you get stuck with the mess of how to retcon ability cards onto the originals to keep all the heroes roughly on par. Not that it -can't- be done, certainly as home-brew it would be easy enough to mix and match the cards from the Jungles of Delthrak characters onto the original Dwarf and Barbarian (and I fully suspect the AH designers had exactly that in mind when they made such similar heroes). But trying to re-balance the old and new heroes relative to each other in that manner might lead to a production time-line that they may not be certain of hanging onto. Nobody wants a repeat of the '90s situation where the game as a whole is left effectively incomplete because the product line gets axed before 'necessary' packs can be released. As it is, there are enough widely agreed upon fan requests to fill several more years at their current release schedule. While I trust the Avalon Hill team to regard any level of ongoing profit as motive to continue forward, I do not trust Hasborg to hold the same attitude. I've seen too many corporations cancel profitable products or try to sell off profitable product lines on the grounds of the margins not being fat enough.
