I think it looks great and yes it's bigger but not to where I'd say its not compatible

My concern is that flexible rubber casting. Is that better than hard plastic? I don't own any in that style because my assumption is that its cheaper. Anyone have experience with these?

I think they had to make the Dwarf bigger. Halflings are generally smaller than Dwarves. If the Dwarf was the original size, then the new Halfling Warlock would only be slightly larger than the rats that come with the furniture.

Huh? It’s much taller and brawnier. Maybe a third again taller even though it’s not wearing a helmet and the older dwarf is. You put the new dwarf in a party with the other old Heroes and it’s going to look mahoosive!!
Thats not even taking into account the other major differences I.e the circular bases and the anime style weapons. I actually like the new dwarf, but just wouldn’t be able to run it with my old set.

The new dwarf is actually using a two handed Battleaxe instead of a small hand axe like the old model. It also aligns a lot better with the size of the axe in the original artwork than the old dwarf did.

He is using a different, larger, axe type, of course. My point about the aesthetics not being compatible is that the models in the original game had realistically sized weapons, regardless of type. The new models mostly do not.
Compare the Chaos/Dread Warriors for example. Even if they were comparably sized figures overall (they won’t be), and even if you do base swops, the models from the two sets wont look correct next to each other due to the weapons (not to mention the ridiculously sized shield).

Bendy plastic vs. rigid? / New Alternates for the future..

I was wondering about this. Not sure if its so much "cheaper" than simply more durable.

The digital mock-ups of the models show lots of little bits, not just the usual weapon tips... but corners of hair, wisps of simulated cloth, little spines... those are going to be easy to break off if they were cast in resin. If it were a softer, bendier type of plastic, that would be fine for them, especially if you're releasing a mainstream game that is meant to be played with, not just "collected" or painted and put on display on a shelf.

We all love the feel of the original miniatures of Classic Hero Quest (and that would be the most nostalgic choice), they are the same sort of rigid plastic used by the vast majority of game pieces we used in the 80's and early 90's (except games that used those little pawns that were sometimes of a gummier type plastic). But yes, all of us have experienced the "bending sword" issue wherein a piece gets a small whitened stress mark, or had to use superglue to put an accidentally stepped on figure back onto a base. If this is being played by the whole family (is this intended for age 14 and up? Because the original game was for 10 and up, at least in the USA) this is a better choice.

Regarding "Rubbery" figures, well it depends on how bendy. I've gotten some of those "Fantasy Monsters (Creatures, etc) Tube" type sets of mini figures off of Amazon and those things are SUPER bendy (not quite classic Gumby or elementary school fun eraser bendy, but the point where they can curl and fall over easily). In storage, they can get really mangled and sometimes they are so bendy that even dipping in boiling water and re-posing, doesn't permanently fix them. They are so cheap looking that I sometimes wonder if in the factory they are packed in before they've fully cured and this also is while some of them refuse to go into proper shape to stand up for long periods of time (then again I found some awesome looking giant spiders in one of those sets, and some werewolf hero replacements). Great for kids to free-play with and rough handle, less great for painting and getting to stand up on a board for a multi-hour game with adults.

BUT, if they are the same type of plastic as the (white) Reaper "Bones" miniatures, these would be great. Those miniatures are VERY durable. Boiling water dip technique can fix bent appendages in a fairly permanent way. You can step on them, drop them, etc. and they are much easier to work with than metal minis ("Dark Heaven Legends" line on Reaper are metal, Bones and Black are plastic, including Pathfinder and Chronoscope) which can be surprisingly fragile when played with and transported for play (as opposed to painted and put on a shelf, never to be handled again). The "soft" Reaper Minis are pretty easy to paint in my experience too.

I actually created a thread about my experience using Reaper Miniatures to substitute for the rare, expensive miniatures used in the Expansions (painted in solid colors) and I feel like I have some experience with these so that it could be fine. Some of them have a scale of design very similar to Hero Quest (while others are all over the place, it has quite a variety). Cheap & easy base solution is in my signature, too.

If this is official, I for one would welcome this change. You can still get a high level of detail on miniatures like Reaper (Bones or "Black" which are slightly more rigid, but still bendy and durable compared to the original HQ figures). I've very happy with them and obviously this is a good way to keep costs down than if they were using metal (I don't think anybody assumed they were).

As for the weapon scales, as I've said before, the game mechanics don't have to match exactly what the plastic minis show. The original Classic Wizard is holding a staff that looks nothing like the one in the Armory (or on the EU "Equipment" card) or even the "Wizard's Staff" Artifact. Also is that cape supposed to be the Wizard's Cloak? It looks different. The Classic Dwarf is wearing what appears to be chain mail and some kind of helmet (missing the horns depicted in the Armory or on the EU Equipment card). He is wielding a Hand Axe (not available in the NA version). The Classic Barbarian wields what appears to be a longsword, two handed (not available as a weapon in the EU version). On the spell cards, one of the Earth Spells depicts what is presumably an Elf wielding a Spear (not found in the NA version).. but those are the cards, I'm getting off the main topic. You could say the Classic Mercenaries (Men-At-Arms) also appear to be wearing a Plate Armor and helmets, and the Scouts (at least) carry shields (but it doesn't match up to what their base defenses are). The Weapon Rack features weapons you never get to actually use in the official Classic game (you could always have justified that those particular ones were broken or rusted, I suppose). As when we used the Chaos Warlock to stand in for Sir Ragnar (rather than a skull faced evil magician he appears to be, basically the Witch Lord), we used our imaginations, as these were just stand ins for whatever we happened to be using. The real way to get around all this would be to make it a video game or to use actual figures with removable accessories (was it "Dark World" that had swappable weapons? those things are going to get lost/broken if kids are playing, I guarantee it).

Then you get the monsters... and so it goes. You could give the Hero miniatures their base gear, but that might get pretty boring and they'd look wimpy compared to how they gear up later. Or you could give them all their best stuff (similar to Advanced Hero Quest) but then would they lose their distinctive "looks"? Imagine three of the four having identical helmets, and either chainmail and a shield plus crossbow or Longsword readied or plate armor (Borin's Armor?) and a battle axe. The Wizard wearing a hooded cloak with a glowy (?) staff, with a dagger at his side would be cool though. But you'd need to pick one... which will look the best for the widest variety of situations?

I "complained" early on agreeing with those who said the exaggerated style of the new weapons was a little funny. The HUGE axes and swords.. like something out of anime, World of Warcraft, and/or Japanese RPGs (the later Final Fantasy games, etc.), and the super cartoonish (cute?) Goblins with their big heads and tiny bodies (which match the new "Warlock" Hero but not much else). But I've come to accept it. Either you like it or you don't. They've been willing to make small changes (like making the Druid look less like a 90's "workout mom" and more like a magical woodland warrior) but this would require an entire overhaul.

Listen, I would be cool with the idea (and it might be to their advantage) to keep releasing new "compatible miniatures" down the line for Remake Hero Quest. Don't like what was in the box? Here's a new pack of alternates. Or here's an individual figure you can swap out for what you had. Heck, they could even (this is a dream, I know) get Games Work Shop involved. You know, get an "officially licensed" alternate pack of real (and compatible scale) "Chaos Warriors" or "Fimirs" that you could buy, and add to your set! They could do all sorts of things with minimal effort and rake in the money from fans. The average casual gamer who buys this at Wal-Mart (if they open up to normal retailers, which they BETTER if they want to make real money) may not care, but we will!

So whether as alternates or to "fill out the ranks" of the army of minis, releasing alternates in stores would be a great idea. Heck, they're already doing it with this Fundraiser! We've got more than enough of all the figures, but they're giving us alternate Heroes, Goblins, Zombies, Orcs, (soon, probably) Mummies, and... if somehow they get that many more pledges in the next few days (...) Gargoyle, Sorcerer, and Abominations too. What's wrong with a few more after the fundraiser campaign ends, down the line?

There is something of a leap from Classic Hero Quest to say, Reaper Bones (Dark Heaven, Pathfinder), but I've found it works fairly well. Yes, having Orcs and Barbarians with giant Final Fantasy style swords looks weird, and having those "cute" Goblins and the Warlock doesn't seem to fit even with itself. Some of us who end up buying these sets will be using alternate miniatures, but they could make even more money if they sold alternates. They're already giving us alternates for several figures via the campaign "unlocks" and "bonuses" and "limited time" figures. Why not more? If they partnered with Games Workshop to release a pack of Chaos Warriors and Fimirs (or even some better looking "serious threat" Goblins), I would snap those up in a heartbeat!

I don't remember how to properly embed a video, don't care. Here's another unboxing of the dwarf.

https://youtu.be/vnJTeIs5B3c

I like watching his playthrough. They went through the whole base game. Yeah, they got some rules wrong at first but later corrected.

by the way what's up with the inn logging me out all the time? I had to log back in twice while trying to post this...
this is where I've been posting my painting progress so far:

So is it just me or does Mr. Manganello's stretch goal look like it can quickly be made into an expansion pack if/when we don't hit $4mil? Quest book, extra tiles, extra mini, throw a couple extra minis in there and it has everything the other quest packs have.
