Ok, first big update on the topic.

- Some rambling written on the HeroNext post.

Next: to downgrade my Ranger and make 3 "Nature Spells" for him.

Interesting, so using different fixed movement and modified attack/defense probability to differentiate. If they were using the German colored dice, the Barbarian would attack with Black and the Dwarf would defend with Green.

Now when you say the Wizard can use the four elemental or Wizard spell group, I assume you mean the three WOM spell groups (Darkness, Protection and Detection)? With the text on the Elf board, I presume that means you're saying the Elf can't use those three then?

Yep, I chose to not allow the Elf to use the WoM spell groups to differentiate more the two spellcasters. Also, I did the "Light spell" group for the Wizard (will share it soon), so the Wizard has a 4th "wizard" spell group.

About those German dice: I never heard about them! So, there are dice with different set of icons? This is very cool! How it is used in the German game system? Are there monsters/equipment that use different dice? Tell me more.

Mostly it's just different distributions... black have one more skull (one less white shield); green has one more white shield (one less skull); blue has one more black shield (one less white shield). The other colors (orange, purple, yellow) have doubles of one or more (so one face might be two skulls, or two black shields, etc). The least popular ones seem to be the odd ones that leave off some of the faces (no skulls for example, or no white shields), that are gray, olive, etc.

So black represents a stronger attack, green a stronger heroic defense, blue a stronger monster defense. But you can also do stuff like use black for defense (weaker defend), green for attack (weaker attack), etc. When adding or subtracting white dice just isn't enough! But yes, people have used them for heroic classes (or boss baddies), upgraded levels, potion or spell effects, or for special artifacts.

They have nothing to do with anything classic Hero Quest, the guys who made them obviously intended them for use with homebrew rules in Hero Quest. There are also variations that have a mix of skull, blank face and a key, or a "potion" symbol (could be used as a trap or searching mechanic, or potion effect I suppose). Again, use your imagination, there's no official rules for using them. We call them German because it's mostly just one guy from there selling the homemade dice.

"Count this as that" or "add or subtract" this or that works, but the idea behind the dice is to make a fun way to calculate some of that stuff for you. At a certain point we could just all fake this with standard pip dice, or draw random numbers, but rolling special dice is fun. ;)

Wow, those dice would be terrific for custom rules! You could have several armor types that add different dice of defense, for instance. Like, light armor gives [black dice], medium armor gives [white dice] and heavy armor gives [green dice]. Heck, you could do all sort of weapons that way too (some even combining two or more colors of dice).

Yes. Some people love to use them (they grew on me) and have their own systems incorporating them into their homebrew rules, while others don't. Yes, many possibilities.
