I saw somewhere here on forum saying that they even receive a gold reward at that moment. I am almost certain that this "champions thing" is not written in the Brazilian Portuguese Rule or Quest Books.
In the UK version after three quests (not including the first warm up one) they become champions and each get 500gp. Being a champion doesn't do anything other than getting that reward. If they decide to keep the 750gp treasure in Prince Magnus' Gold (the third proper quest) then they don't become champions.

Oh... I played the Game System's Quests about 4 times, with different groups.
In the 3rd group it happened that they did not return the gold and ended up having no penalty. My idea was to reduce the rewards in the following Quests.
In the 4th game group, in order not to have this problem, I said that the chests were magically sealed and they couldn't open it to know what was inside.

Does NA version also have this Champion reward or something similar?

Did it work well?

The name of this Quest is strange for me because, if you think about it, there is no urgency to find the stairs. It's not like the maze is falling apart! (it gave me a good idea for a Quest...)

When you get down to the last 5 turns it really creates a sense of urgency and apprehension among the heroes with them regretting not using the Genie spell to kill the Chaos Warrior (as it took a few extra turns). At turn 17 the Wizard cast Pass Through Rock and Swift Wind on the Dwarf so he could scout the last 3 rooms for the staircase.

Yes and no. No Gold Coin reward is given.
