The way I read it is that if you fail in your attempt to disarm the trap it is sprung. You then refer to the rules for a sprung trap to discover your Body damage, which would be 0-3 BP's depending on the trap and what you roll.

That is one of my "house rules."

Clearly the EU rules for traps are better.

Yes, lots of companies assume Americans are "dumb" so they over simplify the rules.

I think a rule book should have the basic rules as written, but also mention that quest notes over-ride basic rules.

When we play there are the basic traps as described in the book, then there are traps as described in my quest notes.
For instance: Basic Spear traps are found merely by declaring a search. Complicated/well hidden spear traps (at my table) are only discovered on a Mind Roll (Mind +4 dice for the Dwarf) looking for a Black Shield to discover. (A tool kit will add +1 Dice into this roll.)
More advanced traps typically require a Dwarf who also has a tool belt to disarm the trap. Some traps can only be disarmed by a well equipped dwarf. Others require the Dwarf and a Spell caster working together to disarm a trap. The spell caster takes care of the arcane while the Dwarf works on the physical parts of said traps.

The best font of creativity and 'new' is what you put in the quest notes.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

I agree and I did do that in my rules.
However, one could since you can assume that the instruction booklet is read first,
and then everything else is new, it is the natural order of things that these new things are exceptions to the established rules, and thus overrule them.
But again, I agree, and I'm a stickler for the linguistics.
