to me the worst is the ring on the Wizards hand...who wears a ring on the outside of their glove??? Who? No one does that.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

It's a bit weird, but I think he just wants to wear gloves to protect his hands (they look pretty sturdy), and has a magic ring that needs to be unconcealed to work.
tasoe wrote:Wow! That photo with those terrible outfits really tells the story. The puffy shirt of that guy and those things he wears on his feet are surely the inspiration for the mercenaries.

They are Landsknechte, German mercenaries of the 16th/17th centuries, the archetypical mercenary soldiers per se, and clearly the inspiration for the Greed Workshop Warhammer fantasy empire army (at least optical). Just google them, you'll agree. The real Landsknechte were known for their extravagant outfits.
Have a look ;)

Now I'm feeling bad...
(Though in fact, I defended them)

Well, fact is, we all know that the HQ minis are not today's standard, and even in their time there were more detailed skulpts in pewter.
But we all love them, as they were truly ingenious.
They were among the first plastic minis, making a mass market board game like HQ possible in the first place. They are simple and generic, just what you need to fill your dungeons, not the roleplay-character based individual and "original" miniatures that were usual at the time. You see, in a tabletop wargame it is OK to have an army made up of diverse individuals - it adds to the optics. But in a rpg, or a dungeon crawler, it's a bit weird to fight an orc who is clearly recognizeable as the very same individuum you just killed in the last room.
And they are undoubtly nice and relateble.
Have a look ;)

On that note, I snagged a box of the newest release of Space Hulk.
While the miniatures are stunningly beautiful, dynamic and detailed, they are actually pretty unfit as playing pieces.
In SH facing is a thing. But the minis are so dynamic that the feet are pointing in one direction, the face in another and the weapon in a third. God dammit GW!
In addition they are incredible hard to place close to each other. Imagine placing six gargoyles in a room - and facing matters.

Criticizing the HQ minis... Two rings and a toe... We are kinda grasping for straws here! ;)
Besides, being a fanboy doesn't mean you can't criticize...

Funnily enough, as a kid I much preferred the pewter minis due to the higher detail and greater variation.
For the longest time I wanted to replace all the minis with "better quality" pewter minis. I think the unavailability of fimirs was the only thing holding me back.
As I got older I began to like the uniformity of the minis much more for some of the reasons stated by Big Bene.
I guess the nostalgia factor plays a role as well. It's not just about painting minis for HeroQuest. It's about painting the HeroQuest minis for HeroQuest.

I remember when HeroQuest was published, I had played Pen & Paper RPGs for some years. Mostly without minis, but sometimes we used some.
I had also tried my hands at Warhammer, but actually played it only once. I didn't have much money to spend, and though this was before the prices of GW syrocketed, I could not afford to by armies. I occasionally buyed a mini I found execptionally nice, mostly for PnP use. In Warhammer, I had an "army" of around 15 Undead, with a few liches and vampires, capable of taking out hundreds of orcs. I don't know if the restrictions of the army lists didn't exist back then (2nd edition), or if the player who owned the rules and explained them to us just didn't understand them.

When HeroQuest came out, we found it a bit silly, beeing experienced roleplayers, and too young to appreciate the simpleness, but we bought it anyway to use the furniture and minis. 60 marks (if I remember correctly) was still very much to me, so I shared the price and the ownership with a friend.
I remember thinking "wow, now I have enough orcs to really play out the standard encounters with minis". I also expecially liked the furniture.
Have a look ;)

Did some one mention space hulk, the latest editions??? Those minis are horrid, TOOOOO much... It's first edition with the terminators swapped out for classic leads, the deathwing box (not SH expansion). The genestealers don't give the same gharging down the corridore effect.

I've been watching on ebay for about a year now, waiting for a good price on a decent full set, expansions etc.

The chunky style of HQ minis (it's a citadel thing) wins it for me. Look at Dragon Strike those minis are all thin, probably more realistic but I just don't like it. Then there's D&D the board game version and the colour is all wrong. Yeah you can paint but the colour of the red, green, white, grey etc is just right. The frst edition HQ red is wrong too. The brighter colours are too toy like, possibly.

I did not miss the ring on the Fimir's ankle when painting mine (I've only painted one so far). I think you are right about the artist using it to pin the tail up... But the end result of leaving it in place appears intentional. It looks great!

After looking for while, I gave up on replacing my HQ orcs and goblins. I really like the way the HQ models look, and I just wanted variation in poses and equipment. eBay looks like the only option for the OOP Orc style found in HQ.The knoblar mash-up is also VERY cool.

I've never thought about replacing the existing heroquest figures, only expanding the monsters with new races, bosses or heroes.
The figures from warhammer quest and talisman 3rd are great for this, and I've never looked any further.
