@Daedalus - We plan on painting it up but we're waiting until we can get a couple more molds so we can finish the pieces off before painting. Also, we haven't decided on a colour scheme yet mate.

@LordZeke - They are in the short term but I'm hoping one day, little man will use it with his kids. He's only six, so that a bit a future planing for you - lol

@Ethica - They're made out of type of plaster mate, it's called Herculite 2, it's strong, lightweight, relatively cheap and rarely has air bubbles, so it's perfect for this type of project.

@Thrawn - Totally agree mate, I used Hydrocal for some 40k rocks I did a while ago, it's good stuff but there's no way I could afford it for this project.

We've had a few great games with the board so far, the kids have been learning the importance of teamwork, so it's a double thumbs up from the wife. We've got a little bored of do just walls and floors so we thought we'd try something a bit different ....

You know, when I look at these fantastic lifelike models, I am struck by my parents' accumulating porcelain ornaments and showing them in the living room. Yet I don't find much of that among my generation - my friend has no problem showing his son's Lego Star Wars in the same location. (Which, actually, probably costs almost as much!)
I would think that showcasing this dungeon with figs behind glass and under a (cold!) light would be super cool. Take it out of the cabinet when you play!

Also, my wife and I always wanted one room in the house to be dark gray medieval castle-like with a suit of armor and wood chairs etc...so far I only have a dragon sculpture candle holder. *sigh*

Very inspiring work. Just ordered my first mold.

Quick question tho, do you stick the floor tiles to some cardboard or something similar to make it more robust? Or can you get away with sticking the floor tiles only to eachother?

I've got for the same floor tile mold you have, as it looks very good and I had been worrying about my dungeon being overwhelmed with fieldstones.

I'm going to stick mine to flexible magntic plastic, then the playing area is going to be made from a piece steel sheet. Then the thing won't get nudged about.

Magnetite! Boss idea.

My only concern is the size of the steel sheet in minds to storing it. I would like to be able to have a large dungeon with long corridors. Perhaps just a steel sheet cut into quarters would be the solution.

The total possible playing area will be the same size as a regular HQ board (so that maps fit into the quest book). The steel will be in 2 halves with some kind of flexible join, so it can be folded away and put in a normal sized HQ box.

I'm sure when completed my dungeon will be much larger that the original board. I'm using 1.5 inch squares for start and I going to make some really large rooms. I'm defiantly going to think about magnetics but I think cork tiles may be the cheapest option for now. Cork's pretty move resistant. I found a site with 70% off cork tile samples 600x300mm, cost me 2 quid

I had an advantage here. My parents owned a hobby store. So I got all my hydrocal at cost. I stocked up on it when they closed the store last year.

you know you can now get cheap magnetic photo-print paper - its got a wee sheet of magnet stuff under the surface so it will stick to fridges...

and you can cut it with scissors
