Talisman 3rd ed. figures work as some of the best proxies for Hero Quest. (Jervis Johnson worked on that, as well.) No wonder, as the game was released in '94. It's kinda like Ansel's prototype HeroQuest bag of figures coming full circle back to us for homebrew Heroes.

Many of them look pretty cool, albeit expensive ($20 apiece on ebay it looks like for plastic).

Yeah, that is a big hurdle. It also appears they aren't available for 3D printing.

I swear I've seen similar ones on the usual STL sites though, so maybe they are.

Then again I swear I've seen the same skaven design in numerous contexts now. I bought a bunch of them awhile back... to this day I'm not sure what they were part of (I'm sure they weren't AHQ since they didn't have peg holes for the shields but they did have the familiar slot for the base which I shaved off to glue to the Zealot base and think they turned out rather well).

I hope you're right about availability of Talisman files--I didn't do a thorough search.

Thingverse isn't the only place to find them. Just a simple duckduckgo search for heroquest stl or heroquest 3d print will turn up many results. The vast majority of them are free.
