Great stuff Blammo. Your story reads like my own, although my boys are 2 and 4. I dug out my set last year to great excitement. I haven't played it yet but have started painting the figures and building a 3D set using Hirst molds, it's early stages but I posted a few images. It's such a relaxing hobby and great to get back into after my retirement from football. I stumbled across this site last year and was delighted to see so many like minded souls. Talk soon, Figo.

ok back again....

So we started around 10pm last weekend and the boys each played 2 characters a piece. One took Wizard and Dwarf, the other the Barbarian and Elf. I was up for about 30+ hours at that point but we all wanted to play. We started on The Maze and gaming mistakes were made and we learned some things. It smoothed out though and the only problem i had was trying to remember who's turn it was!

We all had a good time though and played that for a couple of hours with some character sheet design time in there too. Oh and i started the players in the center on the stair case when we started heheh but after a quick restart and them knowing where the exit was, it still took them a lil while to find the way out. They had to get the hang of remembering which rooms had been checked for passages and which hadn't. If there were traps on that map they would of set them all off haha. I guess they will learn to search for those more when they start running into them on the other maps.

We haven't played any more since then. We are on pause. Ive got the US Quest book on order and we are gonna run through that instead of the EU version. I read the map differences and the extra monster count in the US version makes me want to run that 1 and of course the tougher to kill monsters.

I also have the US Chaos spell cards and the 10 pack Artifacts on the way. I like the EU treasure better due to the larger variety and i like handing out the equipment cards for the players to have in front of them so im just going to roll with those and maybe add the option to buy any US wep that isn't available in the EU set. I also have the Bracers and the Cloak of Protection cards on the way to add to my original deck for use.

I messed around with painting figures as a boy but not too much. Im thinking of getting back into it as a hobby and Patroclus your thread sounds cool. Would like to see anything to do with crafting for this game!

Play with the american version all the quests and as many expansions as you can. After that you’ll be ready to write your own quests, artifacts, challenging encounters, bosses, etc. You can also find many ideas in this forum.

It’s always good to keep our children away from playstation and xbox, with the real thing, the best gaming system that ever made. Also, kids love to make stuff and use their imagination. It is good to get them into the hobby by designing boards or crafting dungeon tiles with cardboard, sheets of cork and paints.

ps: I should make a thread to show how I do my 3d dungeon tiles. It’s very easy even if you can’t paint minis and the result is very good. And the kids always love to see me do this.

Thanks for that link sajungzak.....it helped a lot!

After reading that thread i have decided to go with a hybrid game. I'm not waiting on getting a US board to play this game with my boys, i will instead just pick and choose with what makes most sense to me.
I still have to reread the EU rule book and i will do that sometime today. When my kids get home from school im gonna introduce them to Heroquest! They've never seen it out so this should be cool since we got a lot of fun outta a simple game like Lego's Minotaurus. Not sure why i didn't break it out sooner but i think its a good time to now. I started at 14 but they will be younger at 8 and 10. Should be fun!

Blammo wrote:Forgot to mention i also had Advanced Heroquest as well but that is lost somewhere... .....although im not nearly as interested in that game as i am the original. Maybe down the road i will venture into that territory again.

It definitely scratches a different itch, but I still love it. It's actually qute simple to make your own P&P set, musch easier than HeroQuest!
