To encourage the players to buy potions I would cut the potion costs in half. Having cheap potions available will have the heroes spending their gold fast. Thus it will slow down the purchase of durable long term equipment upgrades.
To balance the extra potions they will have throw in a few extra monsters in a few of the encounters.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

If you give him (alchemist) a Gem, he will sell the potion you need in half price ;)

Would be nice to have these as printable cards in PDF compatible with A4.
