Order of quests in the main book

Postby Mortanius » Friday May 22nd, 2020 3:36pm

I'm working on recreating Heroquest to enjoy with my family. Given the cost of official sets and the ability to reprint everything from here or from Thingiverse.com to print on my 3d printer, I'm working on getting everything set.
My quest is more of a storyline thing.
Has anyone altered the order of the quests from the main quest book?
And if so, what order did you play them in?

I did reorder them a fair bit.
You can see how I went about it here, along with my reasoning viewtopic.php?f=161&t=4153

The original quests work perfectly well in the standard order though. I for one think that the main book has a nice story running through it. It’s quite subtle, but there definitely is a story, and the narrative flows quite nicely right up until the final battle between the Emperors army and Morcars legions in Black Fire Pass.

There are other options for a novice group; three Quest packs come to mind:

The Arden Daredevils
hq daredevils.zip

Waaagh!
WAAAGH.pdf

Alterquest
AlterQuest (Compatibility Mode) v0.3.pdf

They all need some more models though, and the latter needs some artifacts printed. However they all contain excellent storylines and have their own threads in the Quests and Quest packs section of the forum

Thanks Stig,
I'm definitely checking them out. Extra models are not a problem, the main advantage to owning a 3d printer.

Asides from The Trial I never really changed the order of the quests. However I have altered the story a little bit.

I generally start with The Maze as the first quest, as just a friendly contest among the heroes.
Rescue of Sir Ragnar is next, as the Orcs have violated borders. Sir Ragnar was sent to in investigate but was captured by Ulag.
Lair of the Orc Warlord, the heroes think they just going after Ulag for crossing the boarder lines and capturing Ragnar, but they find they're not just dealing with an Orc Warlord, but he's got a Chaos Warrior working for him.
Questv4vis pretty much the same, Orcs are growing more bold as they're willing to steal the Princes' Gold, but as it turns out they're being led by a Chaos Warrior, someone else is leading the Orcs.
Malar's Maze isn't really an Imperial sanctioned quest, so I look at it as the hero's doing it on their free time.
Legacy of the Orc Warlord is the same.
Quest 7 is about the Wizard aligning himself with the Chaos Warriors to learn Chaos Magic, which doesn't work out for him.
The Trial can be played right in the middle, if the heroes succeed here they become Champions of the Realm, it's their Trial to becoming Champions.
Next is the Fire Mage, since they are the Champions they are hand picked to stop the threat of the Fire Mage.
Race Against Time and Castle of Mystery are just side quests while tension boils over between orcs and humans. Also around this time it's discovered that Zargon has command over the Chaos Warriors and whom the orcs have aligned with.
Bastion of Chaos is about taking out one of Zargon's outposts.
Then there's Barrok Tor, where the heroes have to find the Star of the West. In doing so they awake the Witch Lord.
Next is the Spirit Blade.
Go back to Barrok Tor so the Witch Lord can't attack the Emperor's armies from behind.

I tweaked the order a little, mostly moving the The Trial to later. I tried to make the narrative a little smoother.

Wally and Slev, thank you.
My first thoughts were to move the trial to a later quest.
What if Race against Time was because the heroes have gained the Evil Wizard's attention after killing one of his lieutenants (The Trial)?

I generally add a time limit to A Race Against Time... though not time as minutes or hours, but give the heroes 20 turns to make it out. Like the way out is closed off on Zargon's 20th turn.

For what it's worth, I put The Trial just before the Witch Lord trilogy. They are training up for 10 Quests to be come Champions (it was the 10 quests target in the UK 1989 edition), The Trial is their final exam, then as Champions, they qualify to go and get the macGuffin!

Let me take advantage of that you mentioned "becoming Champions" to ask something that will seem kind of silly: Where is the reference that heroes become champions in Quest "X"? I saw somewhere here on forum saying that they even receive a gold reward at that moment. I am almost certain that this "champions thing" is not written in the Brazilian Portuguese Rule or Quest Books.
