Asides from The Trial I never really changed the order of the quests. However I have altered the story a little bit.
I generally start with The Maze as the first quest, as just a friendly contest among the heroes.
Rescue of Sir Ragnar is next, as the Orcs have violated borders. Sir Ragnar was sent to in investigate but was captured by Ulag.
Lair of the Orc Warlord, the heroes think they just going after Ulag for crossing the boarder lines and capturing Ragnar, but they find they're not just dealing with an Orc Warlord, but he's got a Chaos Warrior working for him.
Questv4vis pretty much the same, Orcs are growing more bold as they're willing to steal the Princes' Gold, but as it turns out they're being led by a Chaos Warrior, someone else is leading the Orcs.
Malar's Maze isn't really an Imperial sanctioned quest, so I look at it as the hero's doing it on their free time.
Legacy of the Orc Warlord is the same.
Quest 7 is about the Wizard aligning himself with the Chaos Warriors to learn Chaos Magic, which doesn't work out for him.
The Trial can be played right in the middle, if the heroes succeed here they become Champions of the Realm, it's their Trial to becoming Champions.
Next is the Fire Mage, since they are the Champions they are hand picked to stop the threat of the Fire Mage.
Race Against Time and Castle of Mystery are just side quests while tension boils over between orcs and humans. Also around this time it's discovered that Zargon has command over the Chaos Warriors and whom the orcs have aligned with.
Bastion of Chaos is about taking out one of Zargon's outposts.
Then there's Barrok Tor, where the heroes have to find the Star of the West. In doing so they awake the Witch Lord.
Next is the Spirit Blade.
Go back to Barrok Tor so the Witch Lord can't attack the Emperor's armies from behind.
