Alternate Questbooks?

Postby joec » July 22nd, 2010, 11:20 am

Okay guys -- Idea time!

I just thought about something, since my Wizard player didn't make it through The Trial.

What about doing a group project to create the questbooks, but with alternate layouts, so that if you need to redo a quest, it's not as easy for the players who played through it previously?

Thoughts?

I've actually thought about this. Either to make them more challenging for those who already played through, or to change the layout for those who have advanced knowledge such as those make it through a good chunk of a Quest but failed, or GMs who would like to play as Heroes once in a while.

It would be a great project. In doing so, I wouldn't really worry about changing the notes, but just the map layout. Simple to do in HeroScribe for those with the time. I'd like to take a crack at it, but right now I'm bogged down with other projects and life things. This fall I should have some more time, but hey, anyone who is willing can do it. Just get HeroScribe, make some maps, save the file and export as PNG to post here for feedback. If more than one person takes on the project, we may even get multiple alternates for several Quests.

If all goes well, mayhaps do the same for KK and WL. Not as important as the GS is what gets played the most, but some long-time players may want to traverse those Quests again. Beyond those, few actually have a chance to play OH, WM, MM, FH and DC, so those would be extremely low priority.

I say, if anyone is interested, feel free to get started on some maps.

I like the use of the block tiles to create small rooms. Very creative.

Splitting up the chests, nice. That will make things a bit more interesting as a Hero will need to carry each of them and either watch the others take on the monsters, or set it down to join the fray.

Melar's Maze (Quest 5)

I'm actually considering using this version in my game on Saturday, but the Dwarf's inability to roll well makes me want to hold off... Ah well. They've got new dice this week. Maybe it'll work out better for him.

Legacy of the Orc Warlord (Quest 6)

My goal with this one was to raise the difficulty a bit and move most things so that any player who'd played the original Quest would maybe take a step back when they don't find their weapons in the normal room.

The Lost Wizard (Quest 7)

I didn't want to change a whole heck of a lot with this one, but I did want to raise the difficulty a bit.
