Scientific Spellcasting

Postby Anderas » Sunday April 29th, 2018 7:36am

Well, another discussion here in the forum;
and another game played recently,
brought me to the idea that this here might worth thinking through.

A new spell deck:

Scientific Spells.
Choose this spell deck as you would choose any other spell deck.
A hero choosing this Spell Deck needs a minimum of 7 MP.

Spells:
Occam's razor thanks warhammer quest.
Removes everything that's not strictly necessary
Range: Magic Line of Sight
Cost: Discard this card, pay any number of MP :blueorb: additionally
Effect: Attack a model with a number of combat die equal
to the number of MP :blueorb: paid, plus one.

Prove it!
If you can't prove that you're alive, you probably aren't
Range: Two squares distance around the wizard, in magic
line of sight
Cost: Discard this card
Effect: Every model in range, with 0 MP :blueorb: loses one BP :redheart:

Enhance thanks torilen
We make the world better
Range: yourself
Cost: Discard this card.
Effect: Add +1 to any one number on the next spell you cast.
Example: choose two targets instead of one. Roll three dice instead of two...

Gradient Descent
A steep rift opens.
Range: Six squares in a straight line
Cost: Discard this card, 2 MP :blueorb: :blueorb:
Effect: Place the earthquake marker on the gameboard and broken
wall tiles on any intervening walls. Every model on the marker must
roll one :skull: . If a :skeleton: is rolled, the victim loses 1 BP :redheart: . Additionally,
all affected models are moved to the farthest tile squares from the
Wizard, springing any traps on the way.

Fractured reality
Should we call it division, really?
Cost: Discard the card.
Range: Magic Line of Sight
If your model suffers an effect you do not desire, redirect
the effect to another Hero model in range.
You may play this card even if it is not your turn.

Einstein
Cost: Discard the card
Range: Magic line of sight
Place the rolling boulder trap on any square in sight. Give it a
direction. It will roll in the given direction with 2d6 movement
per turn, until it hits a wall. There it becomes a blocked square
tile.
Any model in the path of the boulder suffers 3 combat dice of
damage.

Gravity Land Thanks Maurice
You don't understand the gravity of this situation.
Cost: Discard this card
Effect: Target a specific tile within line of sight. Starting from
closest to furthest out, move models and objects within the
same room or corridor towards that tile and reorganize them
around it accordingly. Roll a combat die for each piece of furniture
moved this way: all models in the pile are dealt damage for each :skull: rolled.

** Occams Razor question: Do you think it needs balancing further? Allowing defense, or rolling :skull: instead of straight removing BP?
** Prove it question: Do you think it is understandable?
** Enhance question: Is there any unplayable exploit for this in the base game?
** Gradient descent question: Can one understand the sentence of moving the models to the far part of the rift? Sliding down the rift, really? Is it possible to do this with less words?
** General question: I am on the search for a fifth spell for each group. (yes i already have four spells in each one of them :) ) What could be the fifth spell for this group?

* Occams Razor balance - Autokilling stuff isn't fun. Perhaps do the entire damage, but allow target to roll a defense die for each?
* No idea what "two fields" mean.
* Enhance seems fine to me
* Again with the fields?

Spell idea. Fractured reality - You may re-direct the next attack against you to another visible model.
Or if you want to pump it up a bit.
The next time you suffer any amount of damage you may choose to re-direct it to another visible model.

Thanks for that answer. Yes after rereading it was a little bit very strong. I changed the text to make it an attack with Combat Dice equal to Mind Points paid + 1. Now it is quite on the weak side...

"Two fields"... yes in Hero quest we speak about squares. ok, i change the wording to squares. :)

Fractured reality
Cost: Discard the card.
Range: Magic Line of Sight
If your model suffers an effect you do not desire, redirect
the effect to another red model in range.
You may play this card, even if it is not your turn.

Thanks for that idea! |_P
We could as well call the spell "Division" because it will divide the Hero Group.  *evil laugh*

I also added "Einstein". Einstein in German literally means "one stone", so the spell lets you place a rolling boulder.
Yes I am aware that Heroes could easily block their own way with it... no risk no fun. I have explosives in my equipment, too. :D

Somehow I find it lacking that there
is not this know-it-all behaviour
currently. There should be one thing
called "the feather is stronger than
the sword" and another one called
"discuss!" or something in this direction.

That's a good one! :D
To honour the best thing about Heroquest,
I would name the spell gravity land.

Say the earthquake tile is placed under three models. Are they moved to the three squares farthest from the Wizard, or are all three crowded into the last tile, sort of like a pit trap? Here's a slightly shorter version that might work for you:

Effect: Place the earthquake marker on the gameboard and broken wall tiles on any intervening walls. Every model on the marker must roll one :skull: . If a :skeleton: is rolled, the victim loses 1 BP :redheart: . Additionally, all affected models are moved to the farthest tile square from the Wizard, springing any traps on the way.
You should change ". . . farthest tile square . . ." to ". . . farthest tile squares . . ." if only one figure is normally allowed on an earthquake tile square.

I just changed my text according to your recommendations. Thanks a lot for that one!

Particle-Wave Duality
One, or the other!
Shoots a magic bolt in a straight line, passing through all characters along the line. Roll a :roll1: : on a roll of 1, 2 or 3, the character is knocked prone and misses its next activation. On a roll of 4, 5 or 6, the character is attacked with :skull: :skull: . Normal defense applies.
