ok, so i've just been doing my casual film trolling (yes i am a film troll) and i came upon a documentary called "Uber Goober" that is all about gaming!
i have to admit its a weird 1, although it try's to cover most areas of gaming it has a large focus on how people perceive gamers as "social misfits" with a few of the interview'ies having their faces silhouetted out, and not really looking at the stigma so much that it portrays.
i found it really weird!
i dont consider myself in any of the category's it try's to lump people into, i play games but am i a gamer, if i am i must be a lucky one with a social life (thats a category they missed out)
maybe its because its an american film and they have a very different social understanding, but i dont hide the fact that i like playing games or painting minatures, and wouldnt go so far to say that i did at school because that was a period that i just did other stuff, mainly chasing after girls!
so with my little rant over, has anyone else seen this film or have you ever felt the need to hide that you like orcs and wizards?
what are your views on your hobby?
i think that the film missed what ever point it was trying to make!
so give me your about what you think about it. i have to say that i never had questions before about it but now i kinda feel like i dont understand it as much!

I enjoy all kinds of board games. The only fantasy game I really play is HeroQuest. The other similar games I own are just to add to HeroQuest. I play a lot of video games too. Except for the past year. Not sure if I'm just bored with it, or just in a phase at the moment. I'm not into the shooters. Personal taste. I just don't find them fun. But I've never tried to hide the fact that I like board games, play HeroQuest and video games. In fact, it's my openness about it that has allowed me to gather friends who were previously uninterested, or unaware of certain games, or just how fun they are and show them what they've been missing.

i go through phases where i will binge on gaming, video games, reading or sword fighting and so on, but thats just me. i'm very open about stuff, it either makes or breaks friends but again thats just me!
so maybe its the fact that this film has tried to pigeon hole everybody that i just dont understand, or the fact it makes people to be social pariahs if they like rolling dice!

Have you actually seen the movie or just commenting based on the description? I have it, and think it was more trying to dispel the American myth that gamers are social misfits and dorks. In that film there were several people who had hidden the fact they were gamers when they were kids, but at the end, it certainly gave a sense of pride in role-playing-gamers and LARPers in particular. It didn't touch on computer gamers at all.

i saw the film, there were a few clip cuts of "mazes and monsters in it", i started to watch that ages ago but gave up on it because it wasnt the fantasy romp i was expecting.
i think it might be more of a cultural difference thing between the uk and the american's for my misunderstanding of the film.
i didnt see the sense of pride though and i think it was possibly through either my interpretation of the film or a basic understanding of film language from the makers of the film.
although the film dose have a few moments and im surprise that they got an interview with gary gigax, although its short and at the end.
i can see what you mean about trying to dispel the dork myth, but i cant help but think it reinforces it a bit.
although hats off to the makers for the film, i dont see many others coming forward to make films about it(other than "Darkon" but thats larping)
it would have made more sense to have a focus on the industry a bit more, and whilst i was typing that i had a bit of a genius wave! the film narrative was possibly what i found most confusing, even documentary's have a narrative to them, its a simple mechanism to explain facts and the goal of the film, and it might be that the documentary was cut into parts without any real conclusion that caused my friction with the film.
with that said "rant over"!!!!!
although a folow up film with a look at the industry versus the american religous groups would be nice. also if they interviewed the public somewhere other than the streets it may help!
