Passing equipment between heroes, artifact plate armor

I was playing Quest 7 in the main game system tonight. the heroes acquired the artifact armor that states that it doesn't slow you down like the one in the Armory but lets you roll four defense dice. we assume that it works the same as the one in the Armory minus the negative aspect. However, the way is worded is that limits you to 4 defense dice instead of giving you an additional 2 defense dice. Does anyone have clarification on that?

Then we came into the issue of passing armor and weapons between characters. The issue being that some of the characters are attacked more than the others, so why not just rearrange who has what to distribute the attacks around. For example, the dwarf had the longsword but decided to give it to the Barbarian at the end due to lower body points. we decided that it was okay for them to pass equipment as long as there were no monsters present. What is the official rule for this? If you can pass potions back and forth quickly, what prevents them from passing armor back and forth quickly whatever it is advantageous? Say somebody has a crossbow, why can't just everybody use the crossbow? Clearly that is not intended.

If you deny to pass weapons or items through heroes it will become unrealistic. For me YES, they can exchange items with no problems.
Oh and about Borin's Armour: in the Eur version it is not written that it cannot be used by the wizard!

We consider most Weapons and armour to be large bulky items that take an action by the passer to be given to another Hero. Small light items such as scrolls, potions, daggers can be given for free to an adjacent Hero.

Yes, Borin's Armour is Platemail without the movement penalty.

It doesn't make any difference in the standard game if armour is worded as an increase to base defence (US version) or a new base amount (proper version) because all the heroes have the same base amount It doesn't mean it becomes a fixed amount, shields and helmets still add +1 on top.

Yea passing equipment should definitely require an action. If not you get the situation where a crossbow for example can be used by three heroes in the same turn.

Check out the Borin's Armor clarification topic.

Both p.5 the Elf Quest Pack and p.4 of the Barbarian Quest Pack contain an official rule for trading items. Check:

    5/6. Rule Clarifacations
    . . . . . .
  • Passing Items: A Hero can pass a potion, artifact, weapon or any
other item to another Hero only if the 2 Heroes are in adjacent
squares and neither Hero is adjacent to a monster. . . .
If you interpret a potion, etc. as a one-item limit per Hero, then I'd recommend treating crossbow ammo as a separate item also. That way the receiving Hero can't shoot until his next turn.

Thanks for pointing out the elf and Barbarian Quest pack have it written in official rules. If adjacent is defined as the four spaces orthogonally, what is preventing characters from arranging themselves during combat or presence of monsters from passing the crossbow to each other?

The borins armor thread seems to have a consensus of enhanced plate-mail without penalty that allows you to use Shields and helmets. One poster seems to think that it would be stuck at 4 defense dice. I could see it either way as well, because it is an excellent artifact and might need a drawback.

Also, wow this forum is awesome and active! First time poster here. :) Just curious if there is a way to subscribe to a forum itself? Such as the rules forum.

I rule that to pass any item the two heroes must be side by side (not on a digaonal) and that it takes an action to do pass the item.

Borins armour is 4 plus any pluses. It's quite clever why they gave armour a fixed number and not shields and the helmet.

For the reequip I add BONUS ACTION: Sacrifice 1 Move d6. fixing the issue of the plate armour being passed about, not that I've ever had that issue. There's more Bonus Actions too like Climb.

I'd be OK playing that way too. I'd prefer it to the note in the expansion. I'd allow it at any point through the players move. Do you play that they have to start/end adjacent?

Here's my item passing rules:

Passing Items
On their turn, any Hero may pass any one item they own to other Heroes. If the 2 Heroes are in adjacent squares and neither Hero is adjacent to a Monster, the item can be passed with no problems. If the item is a piece of armor or clothing that is currently equipped or being worn, then passing the item counts as an action. Otherwise, it can be performed alongside an action as a bonus.

If the Heroes are adjacent to a Monster or not adjacent to each other but within sight range, the item can be passed from one Hero to the other with a chance to drop the item. The throwing Hero must roll one White Combat Die. If a Black Shield is rolled, the item falls to the ground in a space halfway between the two Heroes (or at the Hero’s feet if adjacent to a Monster). The item can be retrieved by any Hero or Monster moving to that space on their turn with no additional action necessary other than announcing their intention to pick up the item. Important! Fragile items like Potions will break and be destroyed if the throw fails. An item’s durability will be decided by Zargon.
