Closing Doors

Postby Ethica » Monday February 15th, 2010 8:05am

I understand the official rules governing doors-
1) Once a door is opened it remains open for the rest of the game.
2) You can't attack through doorways.
3) Monsters can't open doors.

But I have alternative rules that are simple and more realistic.

1) Doors can be closed again.
2) As long as you are adjacent to a door you can hold it closed, this prevents anyone on the other side from attcking you.
3) Heroes and monsters can hold doors closed.
4)Monsters can open doors.

What this does is prevent the moving back through a doorway to avoid being attacked tactic which is possible in the official rules. It doesnt make sense that someone could stand at a doorway and kill everyone inside with their crossbow while being at no risk themselves.

The monsters could choose to block doorways until heroes have no choice but the move away and let them out. Monsters can also open up new doors to call on reinforcements, as they well might in real life.

Anyone have any opinions on this?

That's odd, I could have sworn it said in my rule book that it wasn't allowed. That was a long time ago though.

Attacking though doorways is totally allowed. Standing in front of a doorway is a good way to minimize the number of monsters that can attack on Zargon's turn. However, it can be hazardous to the Hero that is the meat-wall.

Closing a door makes perfect sense.
In fact, you could do a body (strength) roll if the monster on the other side could be strong enough to overpower you and burst the previously opened door anyway.

If it was a zombie, it wouldn't even conceive of being able to open the door, much less that you are still behind it; out of sight, out of (rotting away) "mind".
While a Chaos warrior could splinter the door to bits with his ax.

Using a combination of Mind Points and Attack Dice, a simple system of Monsters breaking through re-closed doors could be devised.

I already use open/close rules.
It makes more sense as you said.
And yes the monsters can open doors and release their friends 2 steps away in a corridor.
However it gives a huge difficulty for the heroes so watch out and give them more power or...

I've noticed in some homebrew expansions that you can buy iron spikes (for about 25 gold coins each) which you can use to wedge doors shut. These doors can then only be broken down after attacking it with 3 hit points. I guess you have to assume that doors only open one way to make this work.

Those heros don't seem none too powerful for me anyway as it is! Someone's dying often enough...
