There's no reason the Wiz can't use a staff that gets even TWO magic dmg per hit - doing equivalent to that sword artifact needed to kill the witch lord. The wiz can spend some gold on staff combat training - giving him more attack/defense die. Or he can study alchemy and learn how to poison his throwing daggers so that even 1 dmg getting thru can poison any living monster - taking 1 or more health off them every turn, depending on how much gold the wiz sank into training.

Just an overlooked piece of poor design, I wager. And maybe THAT'S something that's up to us, the fans, to rectify, by adding an Artifact card that can be used by all the Heroes but is like a giant's ancient sword, enchanted to act on its own, which swings in an arc, striking all enemies adjacent to the Hero for 6 WD, but then immediately crumbles to dust. Or something?

Yeah, many have noted the vanilla Wizard just doesn't stack up well to the vanilla Barbarian, thus the subtractive method for handling scrolls or other house rules keep popping up. Addative works as a balance, too. A 6 combat dice sword is too much for me, however. Every Hero can already use a Strength potion that adds 2 Attack Dice. Combine that with a Wizard's Staff that has 2 Attack dice, and the Wizard can make a single attack that measures up to a Barbarian swinging a Battle Axe.

I wouldn't bother any about unpopularity of opinion regarding scroll use. Most likely the uspoken majority is with you anyway. Heroquesters like to tinker here and there in varying degrees, but for the most part we prefer the simple rules of the published game to the houserule of another (right)?

maybe the potion of strength doesn't work on a Wiz - it is interfered with by his natural magic abilities...
