I understand that traps have to be searched for.
When a door is opened, Morcar places monsters and furniture and doors in the room.
It doesn't make a difference if a hero or the genie opens the door, in my understanding.

Though you could always give the spell that twist to make the open-a-door option more attractive to the players.

Only the monsters. Treat it as if a player had opened the door.

Version 1, German rules, said that a hero must not move through the same space twice in one turn...he cannot open a door without entering the room...a room is only revealed by entering the room...no "open the door, reveal the room, decide to enter it or stay out of the room" as in the master edition. How do YOU play?

If a room is only revealed if a hero opens the door AND enters the room but he is not allowed to leave the room in the same turn everything becomes harder....more monsters will attack him in Zargon's turn instead of the single monster he would be attacked by if he stayed in front of the door without entering the room. The other heroes are forced to enter the room, too...to help the hero who has just entered it.

The German rules leave much to desire.
There are many things unclear and even more contardicitons.
This thing you mentioned about not passing one square more than once in a turn is one of those contradicitons.
I can't even remember reading something like this...

Found it! There are different versions of HeroQuest...HQ 1, HQ 2 and the Master Edition. Maybe only two versions, HQ 1 and the Master Edition but the very first version had this movement rule.

Online rules (Hasbro still hosts them for some reason):

http://www.hasbro.de/manuals/04271.pdf

Here's a combined screenshot:

The translation:

"While moving heroes and monsters must not pass the same square twice in the same turn"

and...

"After opening the door you may enter the room if you still have movement points left. However, you must not leave the room in the same turn again as you must not pass the same square twice in the same turn."

You definitely may NOT enter the same square twice in one turn. Being allowed to do so seems logical - but it's there for gameplay reasons.
The monsters can't make an ambush around a corner if the heroes are allowed to peek and then run away.
(At least this is clearly stated in the Danish rules with which I'm very familiar...)

As for rooms and doors... The content of a room is revealed when a hero asks to open a door. He doesn't need to enter the room to see what's inside.
He can in fact open several doors down a corridor and reveal lots of rooms (and monsters).
Notice that this does in fact not contradict your German translation

bah. A batch of monsters that see a hero peek round the corner (they have to roll to determine if they were attentive enough) should be able to split up and try to surround them, walking thru whatever rooms are on the way and alerting help en route! There's no reason heros can't enter the same space as many times as they like! You get into some serious scrapes that way - this is why more healing potions make for a better game!
It's exciting when yor on the brink of death and come out on top! And when you DIE it makes the game all the better when yor in such a situation again! Makes it well worth playing!
HARDCORE baby!

Goblin King When were your Danish rules printed? The original German rules are from 1989...the Master Edition is from 1992 I think...and the square rules aren't there anymore...neither for the US version. In the US version you can walk around as you like, without any restrictions.

It appears the square rules are in 1st edition UK and European. The 2nd edition German edition came out in early 1990, by far the most of us have these.
I don't know the percentage, but 1st German edition, which is a true translation of the 1st UK edition, is pretty rare.
The seond edition is the version with most of these annoying mistakes and contradictions that are the reason for us making our own rules.

Uuuh! Does that mean I own a valuable 1st edition Hero Quest? :P

*finds Danish rulebook*

Hmm... It's copyrighted in 1990, so I guess they just never changed the square rule in DK?
So are you guys saying you all just walk all over the board! I'm shocked and appalled! Nobody uses the square rule?
