Got my set on Tues. 2/6. Still not sure about corporate ideas of efficiency, but kinda figured out the odd routing. Apparently, DHL eCommerce location in Chicago is a port facility; Hasbro must contract them to handle customs for their products arriving from China. The Kansas City site is their mid-west distribution center, which used to be in St. Louis, but they moved it last year. So it kinda boils down to the facilities being 'specialized' to a reduced task set.
As to the product itself, I've said before that they basically got my money only because I'm an obsessive completionist and it's part of the revival retail "collection." The dice themselves are lovely, but honestly worth around $8... round up to $10 for the fancy tin (which holds those suckers -tight-. I had to smoosh down on the foam to get enough grip on the dice to pull them out.) And the storage scroll/rolling mat is pretty much identical to ones that go for $15 on Amazon, aside from the embossed HeroQuest logo. So the $35 price is about $10 high... -before- adding on shipping and sales tax (because I'm in IL). I won't go as far as to call it buyer's remorse; I knew I was overpaying when I did it, but in terms of value an item like this really should cost less than a small expansion pack, not more.
I'm troubled by the fact that these are still not available on Amazon. Pulse exclusives are bad juju. One, because exclusive releases equal limited production/distribution which signals a lack of confidence in the product's popularity on Hasbro's part. Two, because ordering through Pulse incurs additional shipping cost, either per order or by forking out for "premium membership," and the shipping service that comes with that cost is inferior when compared to Amazon and other major online retailers. Paying extra to wait longer is not consumer friendly.
