HeroQuest PC Videogame, Asian Version.

Postby HispaZargon » Tuesday May 17th, 2022 6:49pm

Hi, I don't know if somebody has already noticed it in the past, but I found this eBay advertisement:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/203756011973?h ... SwOzFhvIvn

It shows pictures of an Asian Version of the classic PC videogame from Gremlin. I never heard about it before.

Does anybody own it? Would it have something different than the Western versions? I guess it would not have major differences, but who knows, at least the box and the manual seem to be different, aren't they? Nevertheless, as far as I see, at least "Morcar" and "Loretome" words are mentioned in the box back.

Maybe it is just an unofficial copy... made in Taiwan or Hong-Kong. In that era, it was relatively frequent finding such kind of material i.e. movies, etc. being sold in shops there. But, again, who knows, I honestly don't know if Gremlin officially sold the game there but of course could be.

Yeah, quite rare... the title can be translated as:

Original (japanese/chinese):
HeroQuest
新英雄傳説

Google Translator:
HeroQuest
New Hero Legend

It seems to be the no.32 of a wider videogames collection from some kind of magazine, maybe titled "Game World...", doesn't clear if they were only from Gremlin company or others too.

And the price shown there... $180? or perhaps is it other currency?

If anyone does take the plunge I am curious... is it just the 1991 PC game in Japanese language? If it used the Japanese rules that would be VERY interesting. But I have a sneaking suspicion it is just a language alternate of the EU game (which uses a weird mix of rules that don't fully correspond to any physical board game version).

See my thread elsewhere on the forums where I go through the differences in the rules in the PC game.

Yeah, I think the same once they mention 'Morcar' in the box instead of 'Grimdead'... Moreover, the HeroQuest logo is not translated to their language as in the Japanese board game, so I think are quite clear our suspicions...

Dear all...!!

Today I think is a great day for people interested in classic and rare HeroQuest stuff. Thanks to the invaluable generosity of our loyal member, fan and collector ivanv, I am so glad to share with you some scans about this so rare and unknown article that we discovered more than one year ago.

Here you may find scans of the box cover, disk, and the instructions of the game:

1992_HeroQuest_PC_Videogame_Asia_Version_Box_Inner_[CHI].jpg

1992_HeroQuest_PC_Videogame_Asia_Version_Cover_and_Disk_[CHI].pdf

1992_HeroQuest_PC_Videogame_Asia_Version_User_Manual_[CHI]_LR.pdf

I have not translated the instructions from Chineese language, so I don't know how much interesting info it contains, probably not too different from the manuals in other known languages for this video game, but these are the points I can conclude from its content after an overall check:

- This version of the video game seems to be like the UK version. The language of the video game looks to be English.
- The game includes the Basic Game campaign and Return of the Witch Lord one.
- All story background seems to be the same as in UK version, and also same names for characters (Morcar, Rogar, etc.).
- The game includes some kind of copyright protection at the beginning of its execution, linked with the icons shown in the User Manual. I think this protection system was also included in other versions of the video game.

- Real size of the box is 220 x 160 x 25 mm
- Real size of the User Manual is 205 x 140 x 2 mm

If you find any other interesting detail, please comment.

On behalf of all Ye Olde Inn's members, once again I would like to say THANKS to ivanv for this great contribution.
