Re: COMMANDER OF THE GUARDIAN KNIGHTS discussion

Mini review/rant (always has to be a little rant in there with me it seems...!):
The Knight Skills are fine. The idea that there is no penalty for Plate some have said is OP, but I'm not so sure it has to be that way since Borin's Armor can be found and used by at least one other hero (possibly two if you acknowledge more than one instance and are playing a quest that has it, such as in the Mythic quest books). So it just means this Hero can get the plate that many hero players are not inclined to buy anyway due to the 1d6 penalty (and yes, you could always homebrew the Plate Mail to not have the penalty in the first place). The Knight Skill cards remind me of the homebrew Combat Cards on this site, though you could say they are like magic spells under another name, and they're not bad at all. Is the Knight OP for having 7 BP? It depends on the quest you're playing. If he's a substitute for the Dwarf, okay but he can't disarm traps without a Toolkit like any other hero. Or you might play him and have five heroes instead of only four I suppose too, it doesn't say you can't (very little instruction is given as to how to use these). Fewer people will have this than had the Mythic tier, unfortunately and it of course assumes you have the Game System.
Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the existence of more official content for HeroQuest... the miniatures don't look bad. And while $15 is a bit much for only two plastic figures, they do go all out dressing it up with fancy packaging (and you get a few cards) to justify it. And I've already ranted against scalping and FOMO marketing so I won't repeat that here. Had this been a simple retail release, as I thought it was going to be originally, I would have no complaints whatsoever (except the long delay in actually shipping).
What I'm saying is, setting aside all of the issues with this release, that Avalon Hill apologized for (and I await to see them do better on the next releases!), if you are one of the people who was very disappointed and is scouring Ebay looking for anyone selling them... I strongly encourage you not to give in. You can see exactly what you're getting from people who have posted on this forum, on youtube, etc. No surprises, it's just an alternate hero with no new quests or anything, just whatever you want to use in the game. AND Avalon Hill has said that while they were contractually obligated not to make any NEW copies of these minis after the initial run (limited exclusive deal with certain stores) that doesn't mean they can't do some future edition of the "Guardian Knights" lore that will be more widely available (and for those who genuinely wanted to play with these, I hope they can make good on that promise). Sounds to me then the packaging and probably the sculpts would be different on such a hypothetical future release. Judging by the promotional artwork, there are supposed to be lots of these different knights wearing similar gear from a variety of races and sexes (even Orcs and Elves!).
I didn't want to make anybody jealous with those pics... not bragging or flexing that I got mine. I fully expected a couple weeks ago that I would have had my order cancelled as some have reported but they came. I thought about selling them (AT COST) or giving them away. I can use them (probably with modifications). But yeah if you were somebody that got disappointed I say don't buy a scalped copy... you can find cheaper (and better, frankly) analogs with Reaper to plug them once again. The quality of those minis is at or above what these figures has been so far other than the default plastic color being white or gray instead of red/green/off-white and the bases not always being the exact same shape.
I do have a sinking feeling they plan more exclusives in the future, but hopefully at least if they do that they will order more units to avoid the debacle this time. Frankly though it has turned me off of wanting to participate in any such program in the future. I would much rather wait a couple of months without worry and just buy a retail release at a normal price the same time the majority of fans would be able to buy theirs. There's nothing in any exclusive that I could possibly "need" that much to pay higher prices or wait and check my account activity each day to see if it was really going to be charged/refunded/shipped.... all to get what was really no big deal of an average quality product which is still, let's face it, an optional add on that I could have easily made myself.
I think it's not unreasonable to expect, if they are going to reach out to the community and appeal to the fanbase, that the products not only be of reasonable quality but that they are reasonably available to the majority of their customers. Stuff that is capable of selling out so quickly is certainly not something they need to repeat, and so while it may not seem fair for Avalon Hill to keep hearing about it, many people were very disappointed how this (and the pledge drive) were marketed and unavailable to so many. So here's hoping the lessons learned mean more HeroQuest for everybody in the future... and I'll be waiting for retail with the rest of us.
