Yeah the moss matching the bases was kind of a conscious dicision. Some people really go to town with the bases and they look superb. But i just wanted a simple way of decorating the bases.
I will use a tad more moss on the rest of the dungeon so the bases blend in well. The central room i wanted to keep fairly 'clean'.

Just a quick update. I have almost finished the first of the four 'corner' sections. More photos on that soon.
I have altered the colour scheme slightly. The floor tiles have had a wash with Model Mates mud brown. I think it has helped to distinguish the walls from the floor. I want the floor to look grubby. In a dungeon, i imagine the floor would be dirtier than walls. I guess goblins dont go walking around wearing carpet slippers!
While i was at it, i enhanced the mossy areas with some Model Mates moss green stain.

Love it! I agree with your logic about the floors, and it looks stellar. While your first few pics looked great too, there was a kinda "big grey blob" thing going which you have addressed and rectified masterfully!

I guess my only suggestion would be to maybe have a little low mud splatter at the base of the walls, just to get away from the look of freshly built stone walls on a dirty floor. The moss does help tie them into the floor, but it's just a bit too "here's the walls, here's the floor" as opposed to "here's the dungeon". It's a delicate balance, but I'm sure you'll find it!

I love it. Some of the ModelMates stuff seems to be invaluable, mayhaps in conjunction with pigments.

I have some photos here of the first corner piece painted up. Its more or less done, just a bit of touching up and then it needs a varnish.
I feel happier with the new colour scheme and i will stick with it for the whole dungeon. I decided not to colour the individual rooms like the original board. This is just personel preference and i hope it will look as realistic as possible. The downside is it may look a bit bland and boring. Although i think the minis and furniture will contrast well on a dull background.
Speaking of furniture, i am a late backer on the Twisting Catacombs kickstarter, so it could be a while before i can furnish my dungeon. This won't matter as i got plenty to do here. I can see this being a long term project that i have set out on!

I just freakin' love this project... the color scheme is just amazing. Sufficiently in the background of miniatures and plot, and yet also a meaningful and completely un-boring backdrop.

I'm looking forward to the day when i can play Heroquest on the finnished board with my family. I havnt played Heroquest for about 20 years or so and my kids are too young to play now. In the mean time i'm enjoying customizing everything so that everything is in place when the time comes.

Wow, I could have written this comment. My boys are 2 and 4. I haven't played in over 22 years. That's my idea for building the board, so we can all play some day. I'll have to create a female character for my wife. She likes the whole idea and loves the board as it develops. Trying to explain my ideas is more difficult than showing them.

The project looks great by the way. Keep posting.

I'm going to third this idea. Same boat with the 20+ years of not playing, and building a customized game to someday play with my kids (7 and 4 right now).

Figomurphy; Really, my boys are 2 and 3 so i have a few years yet to complete this project. I hope we don't do all this work only to find they only want to play video games or something!
The green slime was done by painting some scorpian green into the cracks and then i used some Woodlands scenic realistic water over the top. Its suppost to imitate a nasty, septic sewer seeping into a larger sewer.
