drathe has it on the ball, nothing is wasted, and if that seems like too much work, you can always just glue the images straight to the foamboard and not make the raised walls.
As for the transition tiles, it's on the list of things to do, but I am not sure how exactly how to make them look good.

Why do these projects come along when there is no money to be had? Guess that means going down another notch in my belt for a while. My plan to get fat and lazy has failed on me so far. The more I look at 2.5d boards the more I like their simplicity.

I may try and blend the two edges together where the graphic meet, but the tiles, my best option seems to actually be to stick a door there and maybe a detail piece to break the transition.

Random question: I had a hard drive die on me and I lost everything that was on it . As such is there any way if that were to happen again you'd be able to get the file out a second time? I'll be smashing my daughters piggie bank to get enough for this one.
