you can only do so many skeletons before you get bored

You can still vary them. Real skeletons are seldom pure white, but rather light brown or yellow. This is not to say that your skeletons are "false", human bones can be white when very fresh or when bleached by long exposure to hard sunlight (desert) or seawater. I just mean, you can use other colors for variety. You also could vary the scythes (copper blade, black handle etc.).

and "wash" painting(is that what its called?) where you water down the paint, so it flows into the details... that never seems to work for me either.

Ya, I hate that. Check out this thread to learn a bit about magic wash. Might be what you want.
