White Dwarf will often depict orcs with various tribal markings or tattoos in a multitude of colors. Do any of you add this to your greenskins? I have seen several barbarians sporting tribals but not many other minis have them.

I have a painted 40k Ork Army of roughly 6000 points. Yes, there are some with tattoos. Mostly they are very simple, a stripe across the face, something like that. That's the problem of masses of models: You don't see a detail unless it is on thirty models at the same time, plainly visible from above (player's perspective). Making a tattoo costs lots of time, so if you make something for thirty models, you do it the cheap way. A stripe across the face that is.

So there are some who have a thing on the shoulder, and those are all in the same unit. There are some who have something across the face, and they too are all in the same unit.

For Heroquest I wouldn't do it - I can't tell you why right now, it's just a feeling that it wouldn't fit to the model somehow.

Not on my HQ orcs, no, I used to play Warhammer fantasy so I have it in my head that the Savage Orcs have tats whereas the common orc tribes don’t use them so much.

I have painted tattoos on my Fimirs though. I recently repainted my Fimir from being green skins to a more Albion/Celtic inspired pinky flesh tone with a few tattoos, especially on the Cheiftain and the Shaman (Fianna Finn). I think it’s a big improvement but I’ll probably revisit again knowing me, and paint even more markings. I don’t have photos right now but can take some if anybody is interested.

For a Celtic inspired Fimir, do you go with blue toned markings?

I used the classic book The Silver Arm by Jim FitzPatrick for inspiration for my Fimir. My painting skills are no where near good enough to do that book justice, but I had fun trying.
