That black part lestodante pointed out is just the top layer of the Gargoyle's shoulder armour/breastplate. I painted it in black/dark grey, mostly because the classic McVey paintjob looked the same -- I did try to add a few scuff marks in a slightly lighter grey to make it look like leather (or some similar material).

Oh, and Thor-IN: No, I am still missing the Goblins and a couple of additional Fimir/Fimirs/Fimirach. I do have at least one model for each of the monster types now, though:

Thanks and lovely shots! I just do not agree with the armour that is black on the shoulders and gold around the neck, because I intend it as a single piece. But really, it is just a minor thing.

@ lestodante: Like I said, I was mainly going for a look similar to the "official" paintjob, at least at first. That being said, I think painting the highest layer of the armour in a different colour has the advantage of not ending up with a massive, relatively uninteresting area in a metallic colour on top of the model, seeing how the top of the shoulder pad is far less detailed and textured than the rest of the armour. Still, to each their own.

Wow your modells look amazing! The witchlord you created is pure epicness! All of them are.

Could you share a bit on how you painted the orcs? What steps you took and how do you create this muddy paintscheme?? I am new at painting minis (at least with the new youtube knowledge, I painted a few as a kid) and I dont dare to paint mine yet. It would help me a lot to hear the order of paintsteps you took to achieve this and what colors you used....I started painting my mantic furniture, learned a bit about washes, drybrushing etc. but still... :)

Regarding the Orcs, the most important reference was this recipe for Orc skin which has helped me out time and again. Unfortunately, it relies on some OOP GW paints, but I think it would be fairly easy to find paints that are roughtly similar in the new range. The gist of it is that you basically need one solid green as a basecoat, a yellowish green for the middle tones, and a yellow for the final highlights. Everything else just comes down to mixing those three colours in different ratios. Oh, and a sepia wash definitely helps as well.

As for the rest of the models, the base colours were blocked in (silver for the scale armour and sword, brown for the shoes and smock, bronze for the weapon handle and vambrace), then everything was washed with Army Painter Strong Tone (except for the skin, which I used GW Seraphim Sepia for). Then I went back with the original base colours (or a slightly lighter shade) to add in some highlights -- clearly not rocket science, and the HeroQuest models are great in that many of them have lots of folds and raised areas that make highlighting them rather easy. Anyway, hope this helps!

In other news, I haven't managed to paint anything new, but I do have some photos of everything I have managed to finish so far. Take a look:



What’s more, I was surprised to find out that this collection actually makes for some forty models that I have mostly managed to paint in the first quarter of 2019 — that’s quite an achievement, given my – usually glacially slow – pace when it comes to painting!

Looks great! I made it about 75% through painting my base game about 15 years ago (along with half of Return of the Witchlord).

I'm FINALLY getting around to picking up a new set of paints and finishing off the set and the expansions.

And yes, I just can't seem to match the yellow-green of my old work on the orcs (switched from a mix of Ral Parth and potted GW paints of the late-90's to modern Reaper paints in dropper bottles).

Hopefully I can find a mix that is close enough to suit me. I'm getting close.

Ahhhh thank you sooo much! I gonna study this link and your advice here. Thats really helpful for me. I havent even touched the minis yet because I didnt wanna screw them up with a badpaintjob so I focussed only on furniture. I think I am getting ready to give it a try, thanks to your help!

I checked out the link! Wow...I didnt know that there is so much layering involved. This is exactly what I was looking for in terms of instruction on how to do it! Thank you so much. I hope I ll be able to recreate a similar effect with my new cytadel paints....

I have one more stupid newb question....when you paint and layer the orcskin like described in the link, how about the clothes and the rest of the mini, do you leave it out and do a similar layering work with clothes, metal etc? I still dont really understand how the layering works (other than the linkdescription explained) for example which colors to choose in layering for different effects. I gotta go and learn more about it I guess.

Are there any other painting tutorials/recipees like this that you could recommened?

WOW! Some thoughts that fullfill my mind when I look at your last pictures:
1) painted are better than not painted;
2) oldschool miniatures are still the best;
3) would like to see the 4 evil wizards from WoM painted too;
4) you did a great job with the painting;
5) that one Fimir really suffers of solitude....
