If these monsters came as original to HeroQuest or an expansion...what color would they be?

Skaven (I know they came in AHQ but that is a different game and the bases were separate pieces unlike HQ)
Troll
Chaos Dwarf
Chaos Archer
Giant Spider
Giant Bat
Giant Snake
Hell Hound
Beastman
Rat Ogre
Dragon
Rogue Assassin

Feel free to add other common monsters to the list.

Skaven = light brown/ochre
Troll = green (like orcs)
Chaos Dwarf = gray (like Chaos Warriors)
Chaos Archer = gray
Giant Spider = light brown/ochre
Giant Bat = bonewhite (like undead)
Giant Snake = dark blue (like Wizards of Morcar)
Hell Hound = gray
Beastman = light brown/ochre
Rat Ogre = light brown/ochre
Dragon = red (like Ogre Warrior)
Rogue Assassin = dark blue (as Wizards of Morcar)

Feel free to add other common monsters to the list.

Skaven - brown
Troll - green
Chaos Dwarf - grey
Chaos Archer - grey
Giant Spider - brown
Giant Bat - brown
Giant Snake - brown
Hell Hound - grey
Beastman - brown
Rat Ogre - brown
Dragon - red
Rogue Assassin - dark blue

Pretty much agree with knightkrawler except I lump all beasts into brown.
But what it comes down to with these "faction-less" creatures is which other models they would come packaged with in their expansion.
Traditionally monsters are all the same colors in any given expansion (mage of the Mirror being the exception, but that's because they reused the ogres from AtOh.
So a giant spider would be brown if it came with brown skaven, but it would be grey if it came with grey chaos creatures.

True that.
j., are you planning on color-coding your minis or give them some color-related rules?

I'm not an artist to paint minis. I actually like playing with the minis the way they come. So long winded answer...yes I'm planning to color code others I have to match. I have my thoughts on colors but wanted to see other opinions. My Jungle minis will have their own themed color. Thinking a light green. Can't see making myself do a light green Jaguar though, so he may end up black. Some of the minis are metal so the kids can't touch them until they get a paint covering. (Some of the metal ones are lead so need sealed.)

Jungle minis:
Giant Spider
Giant Bat
Anaconda
Giant Boa
Native Spearman
Native Blow-gunman
Native Chief
Native Shaman
Jaguar
Caiman
Giant Bird
Flying Serpent
Mapinguari
Spearman with Scorpion Tail

Amen to that. I rediscovered painting as a hobby a few years ago, but I was very happy with my unpainted minis for decades and still think they have their own style.

If you want to paint them to match your color scheme, all the better, but I think the dangerousnes (is this a word) of lead is vastly overestimated. Lead is poisonous, but you would have to chew on a lead mini for weeks to see an effect. Freshwater pipes were made of lead from ancient Rome well into the 20th century. After drinking from this water for some decades, the accumulated effect caused people to have health problems. When playing with a mini, you don't chew on it - perhaps you touch it and them take your finger to the mouth. No problem at all. The whole hype was made up by miniature producers who used the introduction of "whitemetal" to cover a hefty increment of prices.

I grew up with lead pencils and lead paint and I turned out mostly normal. Wives "mothers" worry too much though. It's her rule and not mine. I used to do land surveying and we handled pure sticks of lead every day. Was fun to handle as it is such a soft metal.

Chaos Archer - gray
Chaos Hound - gray
Giant Spider - light brown
Giant Bat - light brown
Giant Snake - light brown
Beastman - light brown
Dragon - red
Rogue Assassin - powder blue (like elf warrior/female elf & barbarian - can be used as a Hero or monster)
Furniture - brown
Jungle specific minis - tan

In this HQ 25 topic I worked up some color suggestions:

  • 4 gray Cultists (with a group ability that causes # of Cultists-1 BP of damage)
  • 6 gray Beastmen (similar to number of Fimirs)
  • 2 black Minotaurs (no more than 3)
  • 6 gray Chaos Dwarves (similar to number of Fimirs)
  • 8 green Kobolds (similar to Orcs)
  • 2 black Basilisks (no more than 3)

I just got some Beastmen in the mail this weekend (both GW/WHQ versions and Battle Masters versions) and decided to sit down today to finally work out my color groups for various monsters (both ones that I currently own minis for and other ones that I've got my eye on and will be buying some day soon, hopefully).

I only have the base game minis as well as DragonStrike minis, and other random things found along the way or rebased to create new HQ figures from them. I don't have any of the Expansion minis, but when I acquire them they will probably be recasts so I won't feel bad about painting them different colors from what they were originally.

With that being said, here are my choices so far for groups, colors, and figures in those groups:

  • Heroes - Hero Red - Barbarian (Male and Female), Dwarf, Elf (Male and Female), Wizard, Paladin, Warrior, Ranger, Thief, Assassin, Hero Sir Ragnar, Mentor
  • NPCs - Purple - Prisoner Sir Ragnar, Elven Warrior, Elven Archer, Dwarven Warrior, Mercenary/Dark Warrior, Imperial Guard, Man-at-Arms, Civilian/Townsfolk
  • Greenskin - Dark Green - Goblin, Orc, Orc Archer, Hobgoblin, Fimir, Black Orc, Troll
  • Chaos - Grey - Chaos Warrior, Chaos Warlock, Gargoyle, Lesser Demon, Doomguard, Chaos Archer, Chaos Dwarf, Corrupted Sir Ragnar
  • Undead - Off-White - Skeleton, Zombie, Mummy, Death Knight, Death Reaper, Spirit, Witch Lord
  • Vermin - Light Brown - Skaven, Rat Ogre, Grey/White Seer, Giant Rat, Rat Swarm
  • Fire - Orange - Fire Elemental, Dragon, Manscorpion
  • Beastmen - Yellow - Ungor, Gor, Minotaur, Chaos Hound
  • (Misc.) Monsters - Black - Bugbear, Giant, Bear, Giant Wolf, Giant Bat, Giant Spider, Werewolf
  • Ogres - Flesh - Ogre Warrior, Ogre Chieftain, Ogre Champion, Ogre Lord
  • Ice - Powder Blue - Ice Gremlin, Polar Warbear, Yeti, Frozen Horror
  • Wizard/Boss - Midnight Blue - Orc Shaman, High Mage, Necromancer, Storm Master, Elven Archmage, Terraptus, Zargon

Anyone have any thoughts on colors for the Misc. Monster group or Ogres?

Also, I'm not sure where to put Chaos Dwarves. Grey/Chaos seems like a solid choice, but does anyone have any other ideas?

What do you think?
