Redav, i am absolutely thankful for tips about photography. I had my hard time working out the settings - i know the theory but i am not a photographer.

So this one was carrying a light source? I took the challenge and did object source lighting. I think it went wrong.

At least i tried!

It did not go wrong.
The reflections on the clothes are slightly darker than the source and the fabric of the clothes would soften the refelections, which they do in your paintjob.
What you might think looks weird is the closeness of the original cloth to the light reflection on the light-dark scale.
You could make the non-reflecting parts of the cloak darker, especially the mid-tones and natural highlights.
In addition, you could bring in more red into the flames themselves and into the reflecting areas to diversify and intensify.

But you've met the theory pretty well in terms of the intensity of the yellow and the texture of the clothes.
You could also try to matt varnish the hell out of the figure and then see where it's going because the washes in the shadows are satin if not glossy.
That always looks weird, especially when you don't want any additional natural highlights washing out your own two highlight sources
(zenithal and OS flames).

No worries, I hope it helped. It all comes with practice and while everyone starts at the same point, hardly anyone studies it so there's a lot of trial and error

Was maybe a little bit too ambitious to do all the 21 deadeye walkers in one day.
Tomorrow i'll finish these.



Yes KK that would solvethe Satin problem but the metallics would be dead. Nevertheless i think about applying it to a number of the models with the Airbrush. We had a game yesterday with the finished models and in parts it is really a contact sport, at least for the Zombies.

The solution is pretty simple.
Gloss varnish to protect: all over the mini.
Matte varnish to take off the sheen: all over the mini.
Gloss varnish over what you want glossy.

Or have you had bad experiences with that?

Yes, the metallics would be dead. You have to do the metallics after the matte varnish part. That's maybe the only advantage of non metal metallics, they work anyway.

Plus it adds, like, 5 minutes to every model. And they are legion.

James will receive a matte varnish layer for sure. Along with two or three zombies that started to "satinate" after the third or fourth wash layer.

I did what you said back there '68.

Sprayed everything high gloss and matt varnished it afterwards.

It is not as matte as it used to be.
Highlights and deep shadows disappeared.
That's okay, it's not as if i applied one of the two to many of the zombies!

It didn't take 5 minutes per mini, but an hour at least with airbrush cleaning and everything, so that's about 30 seconds per mini.
Plus i took care that the matte didn't hit the metals at least for the heroes.
For the Deadeye walkers, it was right inbetween the step of all normal colors done, highlights and metals yet to come, so no damage done there.

80+ models, and most of them are the zombies.

I finished the Deadeye walkers. They are great models! They take a lot more painting steps than the normal zombies, partly because they have metals. But they're worth it. If you didn't use a mass-method but some dedicated one-model-method, you could easily make them stand out on a poser-base. They are really good!







Mister Baggy Pants, the last one, i like the least. The others are really a joy to paint! Maybe the will hit the Heroquest Board, too.
