List of Miniatures for Monsters & Characters

Postby knightkrawler » Saturday December 13th, 2014 5:54am

I compiled a list of proxy miniatures I would need for playing HQ and all its official expansions.
This is not to make other people's lists obsolete - I remember several posted at the inn - but to accomodate and shape my own choice of miniatures, as I will be painting proxy miniatures for HeroQuest under the following criteria. Nevertheless, this list is slightly changed from meeting my own ends towards meeting others' who want to collect miniatures for HQ in that it avoids changes of monster types. For example, I won't be using Yetis for The Frozen Horror, but Dryads.
Criteria:
1. What you see on the gameboard is what you get: No chaos sorcerer to represent Sir Ragnar, no regular orcs to represent orcs with crossbows if regular orcs are also in the quest.
2. The amount of proxy miniatures for each specific monster type meets the amount of figures that officially came with an expansion or the maximum amount needed (suggestedly or as a set limit) at any given point during the quest.
If an expansion requires more of a monster type already listed in the game system or an earlier expansion, that earlier number is modified instaed of listing one monster type several times (e.g. orcs, skeletons...).
3. Within a given quest, each character is represented by one miniature (more if the appearance changes, like it does with the Witch-Lord through several quests).
4. If, in several quests, characters meet similar presumptions ("Evil Wizard", "Chaos Sorcerer", "Warlord (human)" and there's only one of that type in each quest, only one miniature is needed to represent them all.
5. I used the NA versions of game system and expansions and Phoenix' and drathe's localizations, wherever applicable (it's recommended for Against the Ogre Horde and Wizards of Morcar if you play NA rules).
6. Some characters might be storytelling devices and are not required as a miniature at all. Those are given in italics.

Fantastic list KK! Thanks! As it turns out, I have WAY too many miniatures :P
But I definitely have everything I need! And then some :D
If in my lifetime these ever get painted, I'll post them. You can find the painted base game minis in my gallery.

Cool! Thanks for posting. Especially the monsters with special weapons was very helpful.

Is the "Orc Skeleton" supposed to be Grashlÿg?

Do you have the miniatures planned out or is this an ongoing project?

Yeah, that's Grashlyg, if I recall correctly. I did this 2 years ago.
Also, Skaven are missing, because I listed them seperately as I wanns write a quest pack expanding on "Halls of Durrag-Dol" and Sjeng's "Into the Sewers".
That would be
- a number of Clanrats or Gutterrunners (8 or 12?)
- one or two Rat Ogres
- a White Seer
The troll is already there. Tell me if I'm missing something here.

The project of acquiring minis is done, but ever-changing whenever I find minis even more fitting than what I already have.
I've been putting together a collection of miniatures based on expansion ideas, like Beastmen, Lizardmen, Snakemen, Chaosdwarfs.

I hope it’s okay that I post my list in your thread as well. Might as well contain the topic. Also makes it easier to compare.

Considerations:

1. Models should be properly represented. No “use the chaos sorcerer”.
2. Similar characters can share the same model – lots of sorcerers etc.
3. The amount of models needed is represented by the maximum amount you’ll meet in a single room.
4. I’ve pretty much ignored most of the models from the NA expansions as I still consider what to do with the models; Shell out? Recasts? Proxies?
5. Not sure at this point if I should do the orcs with spears/crossbows)

Basic stuff
10 Goblins
10 Orcs
1 Orc Champion (notched sword)
6 Fimirs
10 Skeletons
6 Zombies
6 Mummies
4 Chaos Warriors
1 Chaos Sorcerer
1 Gargoyle
4 Wizards of Morcar
4 Ogre Warriors
1 Ogre Champion
1 Ogre Chief
1 Ogre Lord
3 of each mercenary

Special stuff (official)
1 Human Knight (warrior from AHQ)
1 Stoneform Gargoyle (Normal Gargoyle with stone paintjob)
1 Chaos Champion (Normal CW painted awesome)
1 Fire mage (Bright wizard from talisman 3rd)
1 Zombie Champion (Normal zombie painted awesome)
4 Stone Chaos Warriors (Normal CWs with stone paintjob)
8 Shapeshifters (1 of each basic monster with unusual paintjob)
4 Spirit riders (Normal skeletons painted blue)
4 Orc statues (Normal orcs painted stone)
1 Poison Gargoyle (Normal gargoyle painted green and brass)
Witch Queen (Witch elf sorceress from Talisman 3rd?)
4 Elite Chaos Warriors (GW plastic chaos warriors)
1 Chaos Sorcerer statue (Normal CS painted stone)
1 Undead Barbarian (Normal Barbarian painted undead)
1 Variant barbarian (Normal Barbarian or Talisman 3rd)
1 Dwarf Trollslayer (Trollslayer from Talisman 3rd)
1 Wight Orc (Normal orc champion painted blue)
6 Skaven Warriors (from the warhammer fantasy regiments sprue)
1 Grey Seer (The one pictured)
1 Rat Ogre (The one pictured)
1 Troll (The one pictured or similar from same range)
1 Pierre Chancier (The one pictured)

My own stuff:
4 Dark Elf Crossbowmen (from the warhammer fantasy regiments sprue)
2 Witch Elves (From Talisman 3rd)
1 Witch Elf Sorceress (From Talisman 3rd)
6 Goblin archers (from the warhammer fantasy regiments sprue)
4 Evil heroes (Normal heroes in black colors and red eyes)
4 Beastmen (Talisman 3rd)
4 Chaos Dwarfs (Talisman 3rd)
3 AHQ heroes (Dwarf, wizard and elf - warrior is already there)
1 Minotaur (Talisman 3rd)

edit: changed Talisman 2nd to 3rd. It's the plastic ones I'm using.

@GK
"Basic stuff
10 skeletons"

We just played "witch lord - quest 6" where there were 12 skeletons in the center room (NA)

Yeah I know actually.
I should have said I planned to use a couple of the "special" skeletons to fill those ranks.
I just don't care to paint those extra standard monsters just to fill that one room in one quest. :P

Spirit Riders.
Also, for other monster types that appear as regualar and as variants in one quest (orcs and orcs w/ crossbow), you can always paint ranks differently.
Color-code your orcs into 6 and 4. one of these numbers can have crossbows, and it's easy to keep track during play.
That being said, if your spirit riders will be color variants of skeletons, you can easily deal with only 8 regular ones and do the same as described above.

Good list, too. And yes, I'm all for posting all future lists and variants in "my" thread. It could also be merged w/ older ones, but it has a different approach to it by its miniature acquisition stratagem.

My list is for "modern", more detailed, more diverse, more expensive miniatures from all manufacturers you can think of.
G-K's is more low-budgety, which is not at all a bad thing, of course. It's very tradition-centered and can easily be filled out and proxied by old Citadel/GW ranges and all those plastic boardgame pieces, like those used by Sjeng (and me, when I started out my collection).

Some day, I'll actually post a list of actual figures I've been collecting for their specific roles and purposes. Probably that will go more or less hand in hand with my gallery posts, presenting roles, functions, stats, and special rules along with the pictures of painted stuff. Man, I'm such a slow worker.

GK's is similar to my plan. I don't need more than would appear on the table at the same time. I think I only counted 4 Fimirs though, perhaps I should go through KK once more.
this is where I've been posting my painting progress so far:

I'm fairly certain there's a single quest with 6 fimirs in one room.
In my original plan I wanted to have the number of models needed for entire quests...
Needless to say that would demand an insane amount of monsters. Like 26 orcs or something like that!

And kk knows what's up. I'm all about tradition.
If it can be done with HQ models, that's the way to go.
I want it all to look as close to the original as possible.

That's also why I use the goblin archers, dark elf crossbowmen and skaven from the old warhammer fantasy regiments sprue.
They actually have just the right size. in my opinion both AHQ, WHQ and Talisman are slightly too big.
They are still my next choices as they are plastic and still have the right 80's look.

The only metal models I'm including are the skaven greyseer, rat ogre, troll and possible Pierre Chancier.
In part because there are no plastic alternatives and partly because they have "official" models as per the models picked by white dwarf.
