Here's my written tutorial on creating wood like effects:
Pick a brown-ish color and paint where you want it to look like wood. Let it dry.

Add "Base white and then" just before, and then change that last bit to, "dab it off with a paper-towel in various places as it dries."

EDIT: You can also drybrush your own fingerprint.

And for burnt wood you can use mine.

I brought some news.
This elf is absolutly crappy, the painting was challenging to say the least.
And I found the altdorf guy pretty easy to do even if the mini wasn't appealing at first glance.

The female Elf is one of the worst HQ minis - I wouldn't even call it that for manufacturer and design reasons - and RemyT comes along and makes her a mini more than worthwhile to look at.
