Massive Darkness: A New Crawler from CMoN?

Postby QorDaq » April 3rd, 2016, 5:51 pm

Kind of curious, and slightly mixed feelings on this... If it's even true... But I admit I want it to be true.

Link to the CMoN Site, for 'Massive Darkness'.

Apparently; a spin-off from the Z-Cide world and system, Massive Darkness is being billed as a Dungeon Crawler as opposed to a miniatures skirmish game. However the game system seems to be based on the Z-Cide engine.

Now clearly there is a ton of potential for Fantasy RPG-lite even within Z:BP, so this "Could" be a thing? Also, I know that many are ready for a break from Z-Cide, not me of course, but some are, so I can see this being exciting in that sense.

It will, again apparently, be another KS, which I am fine with personally, though I know others are a little tired of

So why am I dubious? Well because much of this went up on the CMoN site on the 1st of April...*Sigh*... However, there were reports of a leak on the CMoN site back around the 17th of March, which was allegedly pulled down very quickly. So maybe?

Thoughts?

Would that be a Pun? As in, "It's a no-brainer"...*Chuckle*...

I see some potential in the idea, and from looking around the web I am inclined to think it's a real announcement at this point. Or at least I have seen nothing from CMoN claiming it an April Fools gag.

Does anyone have an opinion on CMoN doing a structured Dungeon Crawler around the Z-Cide engine? At the very least it has me curious. If done well, I think such a game could be worthy, after all, Black Plague kind of got people's mouths watering for Fantasy Zombicide and this could do the modding for us.

No, that's me and my reaction to everyone trying to cash in on a trope.

Okay, I get what you're saying. You're done with Zombie games, and those that perpetuate the trend. Got it.

However, if anything, this will be expanding beyond zombies yes? It appears from the brief teases doled out to us, that there will be many monster types and that the game may be less of a Skirmish against the zombie hoards and more of a story-driven RPG-lite fantasy game/dungeon crawler. Wouldn't that be a good thing in the eyes of someone who is over the zombie apocalypse?

I mean, the Zombicide system is a pretty good one overall, so seeing the creators expand beyond the limits of their own original game seems progressive doesn't it?

Personally, I am not invested in you or anyone liking the game, or the idea of it. It's CMoN going to Kickstarter. Historically speaking, they will do well and the minis and other components will be great. I'm just trying to get a handle on where you are coming from since it is not purporting to be another zombie game.

Oops. I misunderstood. CMON and Z-cide spinoff made me jump to conclusions.

Roger that. No worries.

I know a lot of folks are done with Zombicide for now. I am not one of them of course, but I do get it. So doing something different with the license is probably a smart move on the part of CMoN and Guillotine Games.

That way, whenever they do release a S4 for Z-Cide, or a S2 for Black Plague in a year or two, it won't feel as much like a one-trick-pony.

Aside from not knowing any real details yet, probably my biggest concern with this game so far, is that the art style is a little off-putting. It's the same design team as the other games though, so hopefully the minis and tiles will be closer to the original style than the place-holder box art is. I guess we'll see in time.

The Kickstarter for this one will be launching on [Tuesday] June 7th, @ 3 pm Eastern... Very curious to see how the campaign looks.
