I have only ever done low level stuff. Highest we played through was level 6 or 7. Past a certain point it can get dickrickless, akin to having the wizard cast tempest on every creature on the board every time its zargons turn. Getting to what you said, monsters are now not throwaways. They are still defeated fairly easily at low levels but can still wound a player pretty easily. The bonuses balancing has made a couple levels mean they can still hit you at decent rates but you do have your Hp from levels to soak them.
I overlook tons of plotholes and enjoy it. Truthfully how is it always 'thank you for coming to help and save us' every time there's aproblem. Its like nobody can defend themselve. With so many stroolng character, like you mention, there would bound to be more people helping than just your group. But how much fun would a HQ game be if everything was deadand when you get to tblhe last room you see another partyof identical figurines o the table? Although that could be an interesting idea for a map.
My gaming g store also sent out an email asking for more GMs. Id love to try but wont commit with my class load. Already know I'm in forenough pain. Ill hijack thisthreadand keep poosting about what else I see of 5th when I play.

Just stumbled across OSRIC from knights-n-knaves. Great source for magic items. Can be updated to any edition with a little effort. On kindle and don't have link  interweb it :p. Also came across dragonsfoot that seems like a resource for Ad&d. Both torilen would prolly find useful.

Did more gaming on sat and it feels like 5th goes back to the freeform of second edition for quite a bit. Combat mods (plusses) don't scale way out like 3rd did. The dis/advantage system feels plays so much better than a simple +1 bonus. I really like it and suggest it for even ad&d purists. Death is now been nerfbatted. You die at (negative) maxhp instead of -10 or -constitution. Makes rushing to save someone a bit less important. Still not seen the 3 consecutive rolls for death/stabilized used yet. Maybe was just overlooked. Mages killing things first level feels so good now. 1d8 or 1d10 may seem likea lot for a free spell but you still need to succeed on a spell (basically) ranged attack. A little stronger than a bow but its not bothering me. The lessened skill assortment feels a bit minimal after trying it but nothing homebrewing wont fix, I mean who doesn't do a little modification in HQ? Looking forward to gaming tomorrow. Saturdays will be my only option since classes conflict with timing at my local nerd gaming store.

My son is getting the Monster Manual for xmas, plus I printed off the quickstart guides. Not sure how old he really needs to be to play the full game, but he loves monsters so at least he will be familiar with them all by the time he is old enough.

I have heard of parents running games for kids as young as 8! I think part of what appeals of 5e is that it is a lot more streamlined in how stuff works so it is much easier to follow, learn and teach!
