Long time lurker first time poster.

After some too and fro with some very helpful people on the Reddit HQ and AHQ forums here's my progress so far:

Attempted WFB 3e and WFB 8e conversions – massive variances - complicated

Using AHQ – "Second Edition" Bestiary Tables – this uses ‘scaling’ and moving up and down from existing stat lines seems to 'fit' more models in.

Column Notations To Do

+ or - single digit => PHYS Stats (WS/BS/S/T) 2 stats per point ie +1 add 1 to 2 Stats
+ or - / + or - => PHYS Stats/OTHER Stats (SP/B/I/W)

Any Stat MAX-10 (Not WS.BS)


Check Special HQ traits/Equipment and convert.
Create WS/BS Charts?
Pictures? (Got from Companion App Apk)
PVs

Any feedback on the decisions I've made would be nice. I'm not trying to break AHQ - so I think 'scaling' is best

Next I'll end up working through all the new tiles in Avalon Hill - even if they are a little oversized.

What "Second Edition" are we talking about here? The one in which some monsters can reach T11 values?

In the end, the best piece of advice I can give you is to focus on getting the PV counts right, which is the hardest part—Nobody tells you that! Don't focus so much on the conversion itself. You can use whatever conversion system you may come up with, but if the PV counts are inaccurate, then your games will inevitably be unbalanced. Besides, you have to keep proportion and consistency throughout your bestiary.

I'd have killed for this information a decade ago, by the way. It would have saved me a lot of time and effort!

Actually decided to change some of the new models to Hazards - Ie Golems, Mimics (Dreadshifters), MIrrors, StockPile.. and some to new Lairs - IE Dragons, Spider, Serpent, Giant Ape, Frozen Horror. Chaos Cultists

GIves me a LOT more wiggle room. EAHQ has some lush Quest Room tiles I've scaled..

Basic Troops and Mercs are going in. And 100% I'm concerned about PV - so will be scaling to match EAHQ

It's all gonna get tested and tweaked - HQ/AHQ always has been about homebrew - I really appreciate those links:

Totally! You'll see that some people don't agree with this, though. As with every boardgame, however, AHQ has its own nature, scope, and focus.

In the end, AHQ is an old-school, combat-oriented (tactical) DC—more akin to a skirmish wargame than to a roleplay game. That's its flavor. Maybe that's not what you're looking for.

Speaking of not reinventing the wheel, here's a very simple and practical exercise that can save you a lot of time: go through my bestiary and tell me what would you change or adjust and why. We can start there.

By Scaling I meant move only one or two stats up or down from current stats... I'm trying to avoid too many special rules

Here's were I'm at with Orges for example:

Since the base game already features the standard Ogre (T5, W5) and Ogre Chieftain (T6, W8), these new tiers fill the gaps between "hired muscle" and "legendary warlord."
1. Ogre Mercenary (The Hired Heavy) Cheaper and less disciplined than a wild Ogre, but available for hire in the Expedition Phase.
WS: 3 | S: 5 | T: 5 | Sp: 6 | Br: 6 | In: 3 | W: 4
2. Ogre Warrior (The Line-Breaker) The standard "soldier" of an Ogre tribe, better equipped than the base AHQ Ogre.
WS: 4 | S: 6 | T: 5 | Sp: 6 | Br: 8 | In: 3 | W: 5
3. Ogre Champion (The Veteran) An elite fighter who has survived dozens of dungeon raids.

I've just scrolled to your section on Ogres for example.. I think I'm just a bit more generous with wounds. But for trained Ogres I didn't want them squishy

I don't see the PV counts. Again, that's what you should be looking into. I can't say whether your conversions are ok without PVs—that's what makes the difference. As I said, nobody tells you this, but it's the most important part of your bestiary!

Compare with PV20-monsters in the AHQ bestiary, and see how they stack up. Then ask yourself: if I were to add a couple of fireball spells to the Ancient Dragon, for example, what would its PV be, then? why?

Avalon Hills Models: Goblin variants, The Ogres, The Dark Elves, all the Chaos, The Skullblight (Swamp Thing) I need some kind of Large Mummy.. will all get PV to slide into normal lists.

Probably Not getting points - Dragons as a 'special' lair, with the Stockpile Treasure Horde

Golem, Magic Fire/Ice/Stone Walls, Mirrors, Mimic Chest & Door will be traps with stats but not points - I'm working on hazards, and new tiles to add in. So many interesting new tiles - but they may not all 'fit' the AHQ original scale

Giant Ape, Giant Spider, Giant Serpent and the Frozen Horror mods again I'm tending towards a special lair. But I take your point adding a PV to them would have long term usability

My aim is a fun randomized dungeon crawl - with more variety, and risk of death.

Until I've decided on stats/abilities I don't see how I could add PVs.

I've also got all sorts of Skaven, Slaanesh and Khorne models - and for that and your list will probably work - I might just reduce some of the options to 1 Special/Trait per new model - again just for speed.

Even done a "Half-Orc" Hero stats gen to add to Dwarf (My Favourite), Elf, Human, Halfling

Orc Bard, Orc Monk, Orc Barbarian, Orc Paladin and Orc Blackpowder user would be a fun 'alt' hero set.

It's also about using all the models, and the custom figures I like to make to tell a "story" - without it being too granular.

I'm not quite sure if I'm following you, but, in any case, it's fine for playing pre-made quests with a GM balancing things out in real time. However, solo-play is where the game system truly shines in my humble opinion (that's the best part—and a true gem—if you ask me), so if you're playing solo (or GM-less), you'll need to come up with a system like mine, which you're welcome to try. Personally, I've been having a blast with the game playing solo all these years—I've never played it otherwise, actually. I guess it'd be a pain for everyone involved since I like taking long pauses to explore variations of the positions and what-if scenarios.

Wow.. honestly as a teen I played this solo all the time too - made lots of extra quests and weapons and sooooo many quest maps and mazes. Now I'm a lot older I'm more concerned with hazards and random rolls for varierty of play.
And yes the solo play IS fantastic. And yes everything would need a PV

And they remember many of the events, not for the rules - but the rolls, the scrapes, the suprises and the victories!
HQ has been as much fun as I remember.

One of my brothers wants me to bring it down to GM for him and his daughters!

When it runs out I want to take my grandson and girlfriend on the AHQ journey - and I never let a rule get in the way of fun.

Back to twiddling my spreadsheets!

What about variety of combat tactics? From your posts I assume it's not that important to you, is it?
