Avalon Hill HeroQuest posting restrictions

Postby Daedalus » November 2nd, 2021, 2:14 am

In order to insure Ye Olde Inn may continue supporting the Hero Quest hobby as we have come to expect, some ground rules need to be introduced regarding the new Avalon Hill edition of HeroQuest. I'd like to thank all Inn members in advance for your consideration.

Since Hasbro has thankfully taken anew an interest in producing HeroQuest content, it is important that we respect their interests in return. Ye Olde Inn has no plans to provide download-able Avalon Hill HeroQuest files, as it is Inn policy to not compete with a product currently being sold.

The Member Respect rule for the forums will also be extended to Hasbro in that copying and sharing new AH game material that is currently being sold will be assumed offensive by them and by extension the Inn Wizards. Normal rules apply: warnings, bans, and even exile may follow for posting copied AH HeroQuest material that hasn't yet been publicly released by Hasbro. Offending material and links will be removed.

This is not to say that all things AH HeroQuest are off the menu. For example, Rogar's Hall was openly released by AH, so you can find it in a topic here as well (in an improved form.) Discussion, rules modification, new Quests, and all the other things we readily engage in together at the Inn is encouraged, just be sure you aren't posting copies in the forum of unreleased material that is still being produced and sold.

If you find new material online you wish to post but are unsure that Hasbro considers it shared, I recommend linking to the material rather than posting copy-ready images and complete text in the forum.

Those are helpful (and prudent) guidelines for those of us doing unboxing reviews in the days ahead. We will likely be discussing spoilers (probably) for the new material but will avoid giving the appearance of sharing copy ready scans or anything similar of the internal contents.

Showing it in a video is different than posting a scan. Video isn't nearly high-enough resolution for that. Wouldn't worry overmuch about that.

I was speaking generically but a few people said they would be posting pics and text of their set instead of video, so just covering all the bases!

I think pics should be fine—but ideally yeah, links would be best so we don't get any takedown notices. Just nothing particularly high-res to the board. Anyone making those things can PM me and we'll put them in a place drathe's backup scripts will preserve them, but not anywhere intended for direct download while it remains a commercially supported thing.

HASBRO released hi-res of the board on September 22, 2020 when the campaign began...

A very good point. They (Hasbro approved sources) have posted some pics of the official tiles too. Those should be obvious exceptions I would think...

That image is maybe 72dpi?

Not sure. We could ask Professor Dungeon Master or Deathbringer to check for us? Though they may both be too busy patting Critical Role on the back.

Either way, DPI has nothing to do with resolution. 2000 by 2000 pixels is hi-res. 300 DPI that is standard for print quality would be high definition.

The resolution that image is, is good enough to print at 1 inch grid and not lose quality, and still looks better than the original boards that have since aged.

I would also hope, they have not changed the layout of the board, considering they used this layout in Rogar's Hall.

There was also a larger resolution of the image posted on Twitter as a teaser near the beginning of the crowdfunding.

Anything Zargon on the HeroQuest Twitter, HasLabs and Avalon Hill on Instagram has posted has already been printed by people on cardstock.

The question still remains, what constituents IP theft in this matter, beyond vagaries so that people doing unboxings, or scans of the rules to compare the original with the new to detail what has changed in this remake is needed to know to the letter.

What if tiles changed not only rules? Do we assume the original quests from the base game, Kellar Keep and Witch Lord are off limits to post to compare

Each game and expansion that previously existed has components lists, and people need to know exactly which components can and cannot be used form this new game. Spell cards that we alrady saw on the companion app? Hero card we already saw on the companion app? furniture imagery we already saw on the companion app? monster art we have seen since the beginning and on the companion app?

What is infringing that people should not post, that hasn't already been here for 30 years since the game originally released?

There has already been discussion that some of the existing material on the site may need to be pulled. If the quests haven't changed from the original, then yes we may need to take down the quest books that are on the site. As for scans of the rules, it would be better to type out the sections you are comparing as opposed to scanning the rulebook and posting it here.

It would be better to link to the images on the official site instead of posting directly here as Daedalus suggested.
