Simple Weapon Braking Rules

Postby Malcadon » November 26th, 2025, 12:01 am

I had an idea for using improvised weapons that would require rolling a Movement Die while attacking. This could also be used to allow Heroes to use monster weapons and make better use of the Weapons Rack, or even be used as the basis for actual role-playing. This only applies to poor-quality weapons found on a quest -- weapons sold at the Armory are never subject to this rule.

If the Movement Die roll is equal or less to the number of hits rolled (regardless if they are blocked or not), the weapon brakes and becomes useless. If your attack score is boosted or six or more, the weapon automatically brakes. If you are using damage-multiplier effects, such as the Potion of Icy Strength or special colored Combat Dice with multiple skulls per side, each multi-hit result, in the words of Gimli, only count as a single hit.

As an option, if an intact improvised weapon survives the Quest, it maybe sold as scrap at the Armory for 1/10th (drop any fractions) the normal cost of a new, high-quality weapon. That is, if you took a used Broadsword from an Orc, its only wroth 25 gold coins, while a Goblin Archer's dagger is only worth 2 gold coins. This would not apply to undead due to their weapons being too rotted and Chaos/Dread for being corrupted by dark magic. Be mindful that if this is done, it may encourage players to go out of their way to kill as many weapon-carrying monsters that they can find.

I should note we play with the classic EU edition.

We always play a result of all black shields means its broken and must be dumped.

An attacking example - If you carry a "broadsoward" and roll 3 combat die. A result of three black shields would mean it must be discarded. If the Hero has no equipment cards left they default to their base stats.

In defense - You are a dwarf wearing a helmet and carrying a shield so you roll 4 dice. A result of all black shields would mean the character can choose to discard either the shield or the helmet card and next time defends with three dice.

We started doing this because our Heroes became really well established and got a bit stuck in their MASSIVE loadouts. It keeps them well balanced within the game and allows for some more "NOOOOOOO" moments.
